Possible to pass emissions w/o AIR tubes?

I think the engine bay wouild look a lot cleaner without all the AIR crap there and that smog pump gone. 'round her we have testing every 2 years. would it be possible to still pass without the AIR crap? could i just get a new cat that doesn't need an AIR tube?

If you look at the schematic of the air setup you'll see the diverter only opens air to the manifolds on warm up. I think it closes when it goes into closed loop..

The second solenoid opens at closed loop and diverts air to the catalytic converter.

Under PE (wot) both solenoids close and air is diverted out a check valve.

Why did I tell you all of this? So you understand the answer. Which is Yes.. Your car should be warmed up, and well into closed loop during testing..

well you should pass the sniffer on the e-test but if theres a visual youll fail on that. if there is no visual be warned the law is if your car came with an emissions device it must have the emissions device on it regardless so if you get pulled over by the smog police they can hit you with some pretty descent fines.

If you run a new emissions system its legal though. I.e, if you transplanted a complete LS1 into a thirdgen and ran ls1 emissions that would be fine.

Otherwise, yeah you could be cited for removing emissions components, but we'd have to know exactly what was missing to cite you so its not as likely as say you getting cited for a missing cat.

Here in Mass they only looked under my car and saw that I had a cat. I have nothing else and I passed the tests with flying colors! And that's with a 192,000 mile car

Cool. Im thinking about taking mine A.I.R. and smog pump out now. I just had my car inspected today here in Houston, TExas. They are supposed to have new sticter rules in place, and Ive installed a 3" catback exaust, and a complete Superram intake, with 24lb injectors since last year, so I was worried. As far as a visual, they didn't even open the hood, I didnt see anyone look under for the cat, but he might have, they definitely didn't open the hood. Passes easy.

But you know, I was thinking, I have the Borla adjustable exaust and have the biggest hole plate in there. This means that probably 90% of the exaust goes straigh down the passenger side and out without going through the muffler and out the driver side. Some still goes to the driver side tho, and thats where they put the sniffer. I wasnt' about to point this out to them, but I wonder if it would pass on the other side?

I was just helping my friend with his 91 Blazer (full size) with a 350 TBI. He has no air tubes... stock. He has a cat, egr, etc. but no air tubes. He passes just fine!

That a truck. Completely different story.

Larry, here they have a mirror on a stick that they use to look for the cat. If you are on the other side of the car, you'll never see them looking for it because they don't have to bend over.

Ive got all the AIR stuff off the car because I am putting on the SLP headers finally. Wow, it looks like a normal engine. I want to leave it off since I just got it inspected anyway. IF I have to I could put it back on next year. They headers have AIR fittings, but I could just plug them. What about the smog pump? Can you just leave it open or do you have to remove the pulley and get a different belt or what.?

Thanks

I just bypassed it with a shorter belt, and it's a good idea if you might have to reconnect the emissions eventually.

99% of the time the pumps freeze up once you take the belt off.

Why? Because the checkvalves have failed and exhaust gets into the pump and carbon siezes it up.
