Anybody ever try this custom (jerry-rigged) side exhaust?
Anybody ever try this custom (jerry-rigged) side exhaust?
I've wondered about running a setup going from headers to y-pipe, connecting to a muffler where the cat used to be, and then running a pipe on back to exit out in front of the right rear wheel (side exit).
This seems like it'd be an easy custom exhaust, without spending hundreds of bucks on a cat back system. Easier to fab up too, don't have to worry about going over the axle, only trick is finding somewhere to hang the pipes from.
What do you think? Good idea or no?

It'll look good sitting in front of the double-wide...
Look at the stickies above. There is at least one with exits in front of the tires IIRC. Ground clearance would be one issue, since the chassis really isn't friendly to routing other than factory.

Uh, I was under the impression that the exhaust had to exit behind the passenger compartment...... (had that problem with my blazer.....) Is that no longer the case? Or, is that another one of those laws that just doesnt get enforced? (like spam being illegal...... lol)

a buddy and i had a 84 berlineta and we had a set of corvette side pipes on it. It would shower sparks like a ****, but sounded awesome. ill try to dig up some picts or ill go to where it sits.. (motor froze and we sold)
I love the idea of side exit pipes... I was gonna have some rectangle tips come out in front of my rear tires but as i recalled from the side pipes it would dragg to much for how i drive. you can always have some oval piping run to save about a half inch...
take picts and post if you get it done.

yea that was a lil extreme but now i have different mufflers (Stainless Specielties 69 Chambered) with the same exit but oddly enough they never do hit.... but i usually take it easy on huge bumps

I did this with dual 3" pipes and two 40 series flows. The clearance is limited, especially on a lowered vehicle. It would be best to use oval pipe or a dr. gas clearance tube. Notching the frame would be another option. I have since switched to mufflex 4". Here is a picture of the dual exhaust with LT1 tips at Fastchip.
