Muffler guts
Note that the pic is what my muffler would look like from the top down. Just a regular stock type muffler.
Can anyone give me and idea of what the insides might be shaped like??? I am gonna cut a hole into it and gut it for free flow.
I would like to only cut the hole as big as needed. rather then cutting the whole bottom out. And yea that the other reason.
I am doing it from the bottom and want it less obvious then a big 12x24in square cut n re-welded in.

i dont really know about your specific question but i wouldn't recommend taking everything out, ie "gutting" it. it will create TONS of turbulence and in essence restrict the power of the car, all the air will be swirling around without a set exit. so not a very good idea.

I don't know either. Some places are worse than others. AFIK, it's up to the individual city to make the laws from bad to wrose about that stuff.
From my exp. with a v6 and louder than stock mufflers.. they sound absoultely awful. No muffler on them is just... well... I'll just say 'yuck' to be nice.
Here is one I made in spare time for a friend... while an improvement over a flowmaster.. it still leaves much to be desired in the sound dept. (may sound pretty good on a v8 though..)....

My car ran very well but it got louder n louder. I tracked down several exhaust leaks and fixed each one. The last one being the flange clamp near where the cat would be. [I have no cat] But now that every hole is sealed up the car feels a bit restrictive. It runs fine but doesn't rev as freely.
I would assume rust n crap form the bad spots got into the muffler. I did consider taking it down and replacing it with a free flow glass pack but I would lose my dual tips / it owuld be a whole bunch of work to keep the dual tips on either side.
A new cat back aint gonna happen. Most of the leaks I fixed were in that area and its all new pipe now.
I just thought it would make it the easiest if I cut open the muffler and made it flow free.
I can get a similar muffler for $35 new but don't want it. I don't feel like spending $100 on some name brand muffler either.
My first option was a 9.99 cherry bomb and an adapter but keeping dual tips would be so hard.
I might be able to have dual tips but have them both in the center???
I could just drill a few hole in the exhaust pipe near the muffler and make it leak a little like before. That flang leak was the one driving me nuts as it was almost impossiable to see, loud as heck and was choking me out when the windows were down.

Why with the single free flow glass pack I was gonna dup the dual bit but in the center of the car ad short as possible to not route it far or screw up flow to much. Just split it into 4.. The dual part would only be about 12 inches maybe. Use one old chrome dual tip as a splitter with two more dual tips on it???

i think 2 pipes out the left looks nice and its not too common either. better performance also should only be about $30 shipped. I know there isn't much difference but Thrush glass packs were always cool.

Thrush is made by Dynomax (Walker) which Summit and JEGs both carry under the 'Magnum' glasspack name which is a 'cherry bomb'.

Though the stick you get in the Thrush box is much better. Maybe $15 better

Well I went with the single exhaust tip. But went out the side. I think it looks much better than 1 single on the back. Makes it a tad sleeker. The sound is just awesome, very deep n throaty.
Went with the cheap cherry bomb. Welded everything then sealed the welds with JBweld. Just to seal any pin holes.

If you're willing to pay for shipping, I have a basically new muffler that you can have, you'll just need to get your tips welded on. It was on my 4th gen when it had the 3.4L, sounded good IMO, but then I got overzealous and cut the cat off, was waaayyy louder at idle but popped and sounded like **** at anything higher than idle.
Up to you, if not I'll just let it keep taking up space in the garage.

Its a little to late. Everyting is welded up for years worth of work. And I like it much better this way. No more winey V6 sound. No more exhaust tips to scrape on steep grade drive ways.
Its all deep bass V8 tones.
And while I pass slow people in the left lane, in the right lane.
My left side single straight shot exhaust rattles their windows well.
Its super nice. The onlything more like a V8 is a 6 with open headers. That sounds wicked.

Yes I do know and I'd almost wadge that my bud with the v6 would (almost) agree it sounded horrid.
He used the stainless PF&E headers and I don't know if it's those or what but, they have an awful tone to them...
