Maximizing Flow WIth Edelbrock TES Headers
Ok guys, since the othe thread got deleted from soemthing someone said i gotta ask ithere.
Some guy said something about smoothing out stuff in my headers.
Please explain, i'd like to make this investment work its best for me. I am already gonan be gettign no cat, and coupld other things. But someone said something about smoothing out the area where the exhaust enters the header, how do you mean. Like porting the headers?
I have a dremel with lots of attachments i've never used i can do this.
I brought them to the exhaust shop and im getting the y-pipe enlarged. The guy i bought them off of thougth they were 3" and thats why he told me $200, but sine they were 2-1/2" he gave it to me for $150. Only the y-pipes are different sizes and they just cut that off and weld on a nice 3" pipe for me for $20.
3" y-pipe:
2-1/2" y-pipe(what i got):

If you look inside the primaries (if you have smog tubes on the headers) you will see they stick down from the top. Try to grind those off as much as you can on the inside of the primaries. If you dont care bout smog take them off completely.

That's what I did a few months ago. Just did a quick job on it though since things will be changed out.

here are my headers, they need rebead blasted cause they flash rusted.
ok my question is this what you are talking about, these right here, i'm supposed to grind these out right? Will it affect emissions much? Cause i want to keep emissions legal even though i'm taking out the cat everything else i'd like to stay.

Yes, thats them. You should grind those down so they are flush with the tube. The basic idea is to get the inside of the header tubes and collectors as smooth as possible, so the flow is as unrestricted as possible and maintaining a high velocity (higher velocity = better)
I'd also take a look through the collectors. Sometimes the welding in there can be REALLY nasty and ugly. My headers were like that. The welds were big and ugly and looked like carbon-coated bird $hit, and in some places, you could even see about 1/2" of MIG wire stuck to the inside.
I just took my Dremel with a sanding drum to the inside of the collectors and smoothed out the welds and got rid of those MIG wires that were in there (there was 3 or 4 of them) and now they look great inside. I had no AIR tubes on my headers, but you wanna grind those down to they are flush with the inside of the tube.

Kid sometimes you talk in circles, you can't have it both ways, your either going to stay emissions legal or not, theres no halfway. As stated just smooth those down flush, won't effect emissions or function as long as you don't grind through the wall.

i wont, but i wanna keep the ability to reenstate emissions just by bolting the cat back on. Thats easy enough to pass emissions. It will make the car much louder and tuffer as well as more powerful.
Now excuse me i gotta get finishing those headers, when i started i started doing just those poles then saw that a lot of places right there could use some smoothing out.

Looks good to me. Just be sure to attack the welding in the collectors if it needs it too.

That is good on the grinding.
As far as emissions power and a catalytic converter, The CATs they have on the market flow so well your not doing yourself any favors by not having one.
There was an article in car craft that showed how they could actually make more power with a single cat and pipe setup, over a traditional dual pipe no cat setup. Now this isn't going to be the case every time, but on a stock engine you could actually be hurting yourself having no cat over a good aftermarket cat. If your state requires you to be smog legal just get a nice CATCO high flow cat or equivalent and you will be happy. I'm smog legal my car sounds good and this is what I use.
