Welding up exhaust

Is it very difficult to weld together a custom exhaust system? I'd like to do true duals but dont wanna spend much $$....could i just weld it together with a MIG welder? Any tips? Thanks

What welding equipment do you have available?

Welding up expanded slip-fit joints is a lot easier to do than butt-joints. As usual, the operative word is, "Practice, practice, practice..."

Flux core wire welder is a good start for the occasional use.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=44567 Similar to what I borrowed (guy keeps telling me not to buy my own, just let him know when I need to weld something). I have a stick welder of my own, but it doesn't do sheet metal well at all.

I did mine with a MIG. It really just depends how you do it. If you assemble some of it before you install it, then it gets much easier.

I didn't find it too hard welding under the car though. The only real problem is the top of the pipes. With a MIG, it can be very difficult to get to the top of the pipe because of how close it is to the body. It would be even harder with a stick welder.

Good enough for hobbyist usage.

cool
My plan would be to, after getting a general idea of what the layout of the system would be, just go piece by piece, put the pipe/bend in place, maybe a quick zap to hold it in place, take it out from under the car, weld it up....just work from the front back....i dont think it would be that hard....just gotta decide what to do about mufflers...i want loud and deep, but not so loud as to get me pulled over every day or **** the neighbors off just by starting the car.....having the turn-downs or whatever will help quiet it down a little, right?
I'm thinking Moroso spiral flow mufflers would be good? Anyone know about those header cones they sell that are supposed to quiet the exhaust down without restricting any flow? would i be able to just pop those in if it turned out to be louder than i want? I would have cat's so that would help too, right?
Thanks,
-Chris
