Car: 86 T/A, 86 z28, 79 berlinetta, 69 chevelle (totally rusted)
Engine: 350's in the f-bodys. 327 in the works for the T/A, MIGHT go with a 383, none in the chevelle
Transmission: T/A has a 5-speed, z28 has a 700-r4, th-350 in the 79' (5 or 6-speed soon), and none in the chevelle
2nd gen manifold on 3rd gen???

I put a 1969 chevelle engine in my 88 firebird and used the original 3rd gen manifolds and now I can't check my oil because the manifold is directly above the dipstick whole on the block. I have a pair of 2nd gen manifolds that are in good condition and I was wandering if those would fit and work right. I would have an exhaust specialist do the dual exhaust work. I just need to know if they'll fit and not hit the frame or anything like that.

Most likely the manifold itself will hit some part of the chassis.

Get headers, or a Lokar flexible dipstick.

It's completly impossible to put any kind of a dipstick tube in. The manifolds look like they "should" fit but it's hard tellin. I was just wanderin if there's anyone that's actually ever done this...So I would know for sure if it would work or not.

Okay, let me put it this way:

I have heard of people on this Board who have successfully used the Lokar dipstick with stock factory 3rd gen cast iron exhaust manifolds.

I have heard of people on this Board who have tried to use earlier non-3rd gen factory cast iron exhaust manifolds in a 3rd gen and all failed.

Personally, I have not tried either.

If that's not good enough, do your own thirdgen.org search.

Why couldn't he find some manifolds out of a pre 85' 305 third gen? They would have had the dipstick on the driver side like the engine from his 69'.
I think it is pretty silly not to just buy headers. I'll take some rusty, leaky, old headers over manifolds any day.

Not quite. Chevy switched the dipstick location in 78 or 79, so all thirdgen V8's would (originally) have it on the passenger side.
I agree with headers being the best option.

The dipstick tube is on the driver side way high up on the block so the 3rd gen manifold is directly above it...no more then a half of an inch gap. And I cannot afford headers I have no money for them. Does anyone know of some manifolds that will work on my car?

Anybody else want to tell him there aren't any? I can't seem to get through. Bad connection or something.

'70-81 Camaro exhaust manifolds are the same as Chevelle manifolds.

I know this because the set that came with my 350 (stock manifolds for '79 Z28) I sold to a friend with a '69 Chevelle 350, because his were in bad shape with cracks all over and horrid studs.

They fit like a glove.

The ones I want to put on now would fit but they hit the motor mounts. theres no way they would hit the chassis and. I think original 69 chevelle manifolds should work but I don't know for sure but I do have a pair of them too. And I'm sure they make manifolds for a 69 chevelle engine. To say they don't is is just Ludicrous. And as far as Y pipe I'm having an exhaust place make one that works with whatever manifolds I find...They gotta have something out there that will work on my car...

Flexable dipstick. Easiest to find. Went through this exact same ordeal on a car about 2 years ago, we bent the original dipstick tube, so as unlikely as it may look to you, IT CAN BE DONE. Otherwise, by the flexaible one, and use it.

The 2nd gen manifold DID work on the drivers side (dipstick side) so now I can get a dipstick in there. But the passenger side is really close. It bolts up and everything but where the actual Y pipe connects is really close and I don't know if it will work. So I'm going to try to find a similar manifold that will work.
