I just got my Hedman Elite Longtubes from summit for only $336.95. They feature 3/8" flanges, and 14 gauge primary tubes instead of the standard 16 gauge and 1/4" flanges. They are even cheaper than the ceramic coated hedman longtubes and they come ceramic coated inside and out. The part number is hed-68468. I will get pix up as soon as I can.

Thanks, there shouldn't be any problems that there wouldn't be with the standard Hedman longtubes. I hope putting in new motor mounts at the same time will help cut down on fab work that needs to be done. Hopefully in the next month or so I will have the engine finished and can get it in the car. I have about $3000 worth of stuff from summit for the engine in the same room as the engine stand.

I'll try to answer all these at once.

1 5/8" primaries

3" collector

Not sure how long the primaries are but they are full length and the same as the standard long tubes that sell for $135 through summit. I can try to measure them but it might be a while before I can respond, both my computers crashed.

I don't know how long they have been out but i just looked on www.hedman.com and cross referenced the long tube part number, they have a big chart that shows all the headers in the same catagory such as long tubes, shorties, tork step, etc.

 

The collector looks like a pain in the *** to hook up an exhaust to. And the collector is so short wont those hurt power. Correct me if I am wrong but I was under the impression you wanted a decent length collector to make both good torque and horsepower throughout the rpm range.

 

The ball flange isn't that hard to hook up, the only thing that dissapointed me was that they send 2.5" reducers to hook up to the collectors when I am going to be running a dual 3" exhaust so I have to purchase new adapters. How exactly would you determine collector length and i will measure it.

 

Collector length, is the length of where the primary tubes ends to the end of the collector. On those headers by the pictures it looks like maybe 6".

 

if he uses the 3 inch hedman extensions it creates a longer collector. in one form a true dual exhaust with no h-pipe just has very long header collectors on it. one of the best ways to tune collector length is to attach a pipe and run the car. the spot where the color of the pipe changes is a good place to cut the pipes.
(if not running a full length exhaust system)

 

I will be running 3" true dual exhaust with an x-pipe and dynomax race mangnum bullets. I got the x-pipe pretty cheap online for $41 here, http://www.exhaustproslinc.com/xandypipes1.html, the husker x pipe. It took about a week and half to get to me, I'll post pics as soon as I can get my computer straightened out.

Haven't had a chance to install the exhaust system yet but here is a pic of the parts I described above. 3" x-pipe, pair of 3" dynomax race magnum mufflers 16" length, pair of hedman x-tensions 3"

Just a quick question here...... and I hope that I don't look stupid, but I just found this site about a month or so and my brain is still hurting from all the awsome info I've found @thirdgen. (NEW MEMBER)
I was gonna run these same Longtube Hedmans "68468" with a flowmaster 3" catback system and the same type setup that "Traxion" used on his Hooker 2210's with the custom Y-Pipe, it looks soooo sweet! Question is - Should the collector be larger in diameter than the rest of the exhaust? I don't have a cat anymore and was gonna use 3" all the way from the collector to the exhaust tips. Any problems performance wise?

 

An exhaust is only as good as the smallest point in the system. Most collectors should be 3" on standard Lt headers. If you are going with 3" pipe and have 3" collectors, the you should have no problem. Dual 3" exhaust should be all you need performance wise.

Here's the Pics of the finished product Driver and Passenger........ it was really tight and a primary tube on each side had to be bent (a little) to get them to fit...... The collectors sit high enough so that there is no clearance problems with the ground. I did have a custom y-pipe made for the set-up, I didn't want the crappy factory layout. That being said, the tranny on a automatic (700-R4) is pretty wide! It would be alot easier to have the longtubes on a standard tranny because there is more room.....

I'd like to see an installed picture too. Ground clearence is my major concern. My supplier told me that the 68468 is no longer available ( at least up this way ). I ordered the 68460 instead. Same header with no specialized coating from what I understand.
On a differant note, does anyone have any experience with strut tower braces? I've ordered an Edelbrock brace for an 87 with a 305 TBI. ( I have a carb )

This is from the front the collectors clear with lots of room you just have to figure out th y-pipe.....Mine hangs low!

 

Thats way more clearence then the hookers have by far.

 

do you have angled plugs? and what part of the headers had to be bent.

 

Stock L-98 heads......... A primary tube had to be bent a little on each side at the cross member/front suspension...... and I'm talking very little....... just enough so that they are not touching. Some say the by putting in new engine mounts you would have no problem..... I never did, you could try???

 

Do you know if the headers will work on angled plug heads, also my changing the motor mounts what type would be needed to clear the headers.....sorry for all the questions but I'm finishing up my 383 and looking for a set of long tube headers and trying to figure out if i need motor mounts, mini starter etc.

I am installing Hedman 68468's Saturday September 29th. Had my car on a hoist last night. Dart 358, angled plugs, and true dual all the way back over the axle. New prothane motor mounts. Will do a complete write up and photo shoot as its being done. Going to run oval exhaust pipe from the headers back due to clearance.

Edit: Car is on sportlines too, this could be interesting!
