yep, thought i'd share what i made today. this if for my buddies car. just a little 305 with an lt1 cam in it. it's a pretty cool little ride, 84' berli that we picked up out of some guys side yard for $400. after a LONG year of nothing but workin' our butts off and spending some serious money on paint, this thing is finally starting to come to an end. we'd like to put alittle more converter/gear in it and a posi unit. next up is sfc's...made by me!

oh, how bout some pics:

ground clearance shot, this car sits on stock iroc springs from an 88 iroc with stock sized 215/65/15 tire. we'll be upgrading to a 235/60/15 rear tire, though i don't think it will improve clrearance any more...about 4" at the lowest piont

Since you can fabricate, maybe you should've made a notched tranny crossmember for more ground clearance.

Still nice work on the exhaust though!

with an auto, there's not that much room to shove pipes up there...and we were running out of time. it was the last thing to do before i left town for 9 weeks and i wanted to make sure we got that done before i left. it was supposed to be done last weekend, but not all the parts were here till today(stupid summit racing). i ended up delivering the car back to my buddy on my way out of town; finishing it literally 30 mins before i had to go. i'm really pleased with how it came out though.

Im about to do the very same thing, got my mandrel bends a flowmaster y, I still need to put my K member, motor and trans before I get to do that tho. Looks good tho, on the x tensions couldnt you have shortened them between the to bends where it drops down, attached pic to show where, to get them closer to the floorpans?

also do those have the ball flanges, if so how are they sealing good?

yes, they *could* be shortened, again, i was in a time crunch and wanted it to be done. it turned out really really good in my opinion, and is way better than any of the shops around here would have done.

yes, they are the ball flange style. at first, they were a pain in the neck and i didn't really want to screw with them, but after i got aquainted with them, they are actually much easier to work with than the traditional flange with a gasket. there is some adjustability you get with the ball flanges that you don't get with the older style flange....it's got me wanting to get some newer style longtubes for mine (i have the older style on my car) they seem to be sealing great so far.

Besides it hanging a little low, very nice job!

How many bends did you use to make that?U or J bends?

I was going to put duals on my car with the new 2210's but the budget ran out,so I am gonna fab up a y to go with the FM single 3" already on there.

yeah, ground clearance could have been a bit better...but this car will not be lowered.

i used two U-bends.

I was thinking about the ground clearance with longtube y pipes and was wondering if the factory crossmember was fine or if superior groung clearance could be acheived with a custom or modifies one with "notches" for the pipes.

it's 2.5" extensions and the "catback" is a dynomax 2.5" system. i'll be building a cutout for the car when i get back into town.

Sweet, I fallowed your steps on doing true duels (I have the hedman LT's w/ ball flanges) and got the 3'' extention and pipes (clearance is pretty nice for something that big .. going to shorten them up at the "s" bent about a 1/2'' to hug the floor abit better. I ahve a th400 swap in my car and it came w/ a custom cross member that abit easier to route under, but I will post pics later this week (sould be finished and back on the car .. trying to get a possible x pipe of some sort in there... have any idea's by chance?)

buy the universal x-pipe kit from hedman and fab up something with that. there is no bolt in unit that will work that i know of. (like taking something from a mustang and retrofitting, etc.)

i'd love to see pics when you get it all doen, i'll be doing the same setup for my dad's ride soon. what mufflers did you decide to run?

I was running a set of Flowmaster delta flow 40's (offset inlet, center outlet) but ran Flowmaster for so many years I wanted a change, so in turn went with some DynoMax Bullets (I like the sound, bit more noise but not to bad) I'm thinking I will order the Hedman X pipe from summit tonight and see if I can get it to work somehow .. if not then an H pipe would do

I done what Matt did, Go to Summit and order a set of hedman LT's (like $148 to your door) and then the Hedman headers extentions (your choice of size) and some Summit Alum. straight exhaust tubing (again, your choice of size) and mufflers (AND your choice of size lol) I dont see why more people dont do this .. I have 4" of ground clearance at my lowest point (soon to be more once I trim the extentions up abit) All can be done and mocked up and marked and then welded by someone or yourself (easy good clean system!) mad props to Matt for showing me the way lol

i had a similar setup when i had my hedman lt's...just be sure your shocks/springs aren't shot, or you'll bottom out on everything, and end up replacing that nice little y every other week...

great job matt! i wish my y-pipe, when i had LT's, was half as nice as yours.

I mean for the price and what not you really cant beat it you know? I give Matt all thanks cause on his cardomain I saw several pics and what parts was needed to do such a mod. I have alway ran true duel on my IROC but this style seemed to hold up higher and look better .. No exhaust shops will toutch these car for true duels (street nor race in my area ?!?!) but I know people to pass it so I just had to do my own system I went with 3'' so I could do bigger improvment on my 383 (but right as of now I have a 406 on the stand and collecting parts) But I do know one thing .. his 305 should be an insperation to all sbc owners! I have a 454 but .. gonna sell it cause you can do just as much (with out the weight and cheaper parts just about) Anywho sorry if I went off topic and dont wanna come off as jacking Matt's thread

no, his is a driver and he doesn't want to have to open the hood and make sure things are OK every few days like i have to...mine really is on the edge of streetablility, but i know for a fact that i'm making enough power to run low 12's or maybe high 11's n/a....that 12.50 pass is only one of two passes ever on the new combo. i'm hoping Kody lets me lean on the combo a little and get a 13 second pass out of it n/a...and i doubt he'll let me spray it. i'm just gonna make his car as efficient as possible, it needs more gear and more converter, than we're set.

Seeing how nice that h-pipe sits up in there I think I'm gonna go with that instead on a side note (getting my car painted this september and really cant find any good donar car to fix afew stress cracks in my gfx .. they are not bad but .. I knwo they are there lol) was it hard to removed the brackets for the gfx .. thinking I will do a delete (I think it would be easier to get it up on a trailer and whatnot .. dont worry about your nose bumping everything!) and also know of any good pics of sc's .. really leaning towards no gfx lol

the x-pipe will make more power.

it wasn't hard at all to remove them, but i had my paint/body man smooth the rocker panels after i was done cause there were tack welds and they looked horrible when i first took them off.

here is the most up to date photo of my car, though it's very dirty, doesn't have the right wheels on it, and the guy behind the camera doesn't know how to take pics:

here is an old one with the cowl hood:

here is jbenge's 84 f41:

and i'll have some updated pics of my car with the rodlites and whatnot when i get home in August. curious to where i'm at? check out the Organized Drag Racing and Autocross board and look for Pics from the Canadian Fastest Street Car Shootout.

haha, welcome to the non-gfx world my friend! you should also see a weight savings close to 100lbs! you can find front and rear bumper covers on ebay for cheap if you're looking for places to find parts.

I have hedman LTs and hedman header extensions. They seem to barely fit tho. It touches the headers only maby an 1/8th of an inch from the edge of the extension flange. I was thinking about taking them to an exaust shop and have them flair them alittle.
