H-pipe or not?

Dropping in a supercharged 383 with a large cam. Dual 3" exhaust. Ultraflow mufflers. I know crossover pipes can make more power, but I heard its only if your exhaust is restrictive. Is this true, or would I need one?

Re: H-pipe or not?

thats not true. An H-pipe equals out the pressures in the exhaust system. You know when its cold outside and you start up a dual exhaust car. the condensation kinda alternates from pipe to pipe when it comes out. An h pipe equalizes this so the exhaust comes out all at once. It sounds better too!

Re: H-pipe or not?

Well a summit kit is only like 30 bucks. If I did it, should the pipe be equal diameter to the exhaust? Or smaller?
Sound is always a great bonus.

Hey by the way, I used to be a Tactical Aircraft Maintenance Technician in the air force. We were called crew chiefs, I believe we called you guys sheetmetal. Is it the same in the Navy? I just got out two months ago. Civ life is a little boring compared to the last four years.

Re: H-pipe or not?

Yes we have metal benders, bubble chasers for hydraulics.

Might as well make it the same size as the exhaust, so if you decide to go with a bigger engine the h pipe isnt a constriction point.

Re: H-pipe or not?

run the h-pipe, it can't hurt anything only help, plus it smoothes out the exhaust note.

Re: H-pipe or not?

Xpipes are more efficient and make more power than a Hpipe, most stick to a Hpipe due to mounting and space issues but an Xpipe will increase power in the upper RPM ranges more than an Hpipe not to mention drastically changing the exhaust tone... i lost alil power down low but 2500rpms and up it screams lol

originally i had a slightly modded 350tpi headman longtubes and 3" duals with turndowns with 3" afterburner mufflers and i loved it, when i went to lower the car i needed more ground clearance so i build a 3" mandrel bend system with 3" summit universal xpipe(100$) and 3" force mufflers and man wat a difference... the XPIPE made the exhaust soooo much better, id go with the xpipe just my .02

Re: H-pipe or not?

I ran an H pipe in my car and it made an immediate difference. The car's a little smoother and quieter now but there was a definite power gain that beared out in my track times. The setup is Hedman long tubes, Hedman S bend extensions, H pipe is at the end of these extensions and I have a pair of dual classic chambered mufflers with turn downs.
