tuned or non tuned headers??? what size???

I'm still trying to learn about the exhaust system. I'm looking for headers for my 305 84 trans am. we are going to get the motor rebuilt and get more power. I don't want to spend more than 600. I think I've found a pair but I need advice. should I get tuned headers or non tuned? I don't really know what the difference is or if it really makes much difference. I'm getting long tube. which is better or will fit my engine 1 3/4 or 1 5/8? does it matter what the size is as long as it says it will fit my car? I', paying my 99 t/a off this month and my husband said we could get a smaller loan and redo the engine and the entire interior. any tips???

Re: tuned or non tuned headers??? what size???

For a 305 I would use the 1 5/8" headers. As far as tuned or non tuned I would ask them tuned to what? A lot of factors go into a "tuned exhaust". Maybe they mean equal length header tubing.

hooker 2055's

you're not going to find a better bolt-in header/ y-pipe setup for the money than these.

1 5/8ths primaries with a full 3" factory routed y pipe. retain all your ground clearance.

many, many people on here love this setup. buy whatever 3" cat-back to suit your flavor and there you have it.

no, but for the money its not a bad deal and if the motor isn't really built that will do just fine. and if its stock or mostly stock i would go 1 5/8" for the touq

Re: tuned or non tuned headers??? what size???

I don't know a lot about swapping out parts and modifying the engine for more power. I can work on it but that's it. the guy who's going to do the engine work said he can take my 305 and get me as much as 400+ out of it. I really only want around 350 total with headers. I don't want a big gas chugger just more than my 99. I'm trying to keep engine build under 4,500 when it's all said and done not including headers for around 600 or less. should I stick with short headers or go long tube? would it really matter? I think the engine stock was around 145 hp and looking for 330-360 hp. what power gains could I expect from short headers? Sorry, it seems like I might be asking stupid questions. I've looked all over the site to see if it helped me make up my mind.

On a stock 305, headers and exhaust will get you more power than anything else you could do to it.

Re: tuned or non tuned headers??? what size???

we want to just gut the emissions that are bolted to the engine like the evap canister since they aren't plugged up anymore and not working correctly anyway. would it still be o.k. having o2 sensors hooked up for shorty or long tube headers? my husband wants to keep the car so it will pass emissions if it has too. I don't care either way. I figured it wouldn't pass right now since those parts aren't working anyway. does anyone know anything about Doug's headers on summit racing? are they any good? also does the paint on the painted headers last long? I don't want rusted headers.

Unless you get rid of the computer, you need the O2 sensor in the headers.

thanks, I was looking at edelbrocks tubular hearders that say you can get up to 22 hp and keep stock emissions setup.they aren't as pretty as the ceramic but cost wise might work. I just really want more power since my 305 145hp engine is going to be rebuilt to have around 330hp.

Re: tuned or non tuned headers??? what size???

if you going to rebuild to motor just upgrade to a 350. So if your going to do the exaust it will work just fine with the upgraded motor. The potential for more power will be easy'er with the 350. 350-400hp is possible but a 350 will be more streetable since the cam wont have to be so radical and theres a better head selection in the aftermarket and stock
