side pipes

are side pipes legal in nj? or does the exhaust have to be behind the gas tank or do the mufflers have to be in its stock place to pass visual?

Re: side pipes

I can only speak to the Federal and CA laws, but they stipulate that the CAT CONVERTER must be the stock number and location, it says nothing about the stock muffler. Some of the states have different levels of noise that are acceptable, but none of the cops carry noise meters, so it's a stilly law. Besides, if you hear the racket that a lot of Harley's make, I think noise is not so much a problem as the speed you are going when you are making the noise.

Re: side pipes

how is the car registered? i would assume that by running side-pipes, the cat is gone, so no chance passing standard inspection. you can get away with a bit more with a collectors car registration/inspection, but your mileage is limited to 3000 miles a year

no the cat stays in its stock location but the mufflers would be almost right behind the cat it will pass the emmisions i was just wondering if it would pass the visual.

Re: side pipes

I know here in Texas, I assume it is pretty much the same anywhere...

Behind the passenger compartment, is the rule. Somehow, side pipes exiting behind the trailing end of the doors, qualify.

After all, the early Vipers had side exit exhaust, legal in all 50 states. It just exited behind the trailing end of the doors.

Re: side pipes

Well here in Rochester NY any thing older than 26yrs old and it is emissions exempt. Thank god i only have 3 more yrs. I have a true dual exhaust to moroso spiral mufflers and it exits before the rear tire and no one would even touch my car to install that simple exhaust. I even trailered it in with no plates and registration and told the it was a drag car and they wouldnt touch it. So I dont know how they would handle sidepipes in NJ.

Re: side pipes

i believe the stipulation is that the exhaust must be past the rear most functional side window.

Same here in TX, basically. I think ours is 24 years. At 25, your free.

BUT, that doesn't mean you can toss your emissions equipment, like the cat. It still has to be there, visually, otherwise, you'll still fail the visual portion. They just won't test the emissions level output.

That means though, you can gut your cat, run a straight pipe through it! As long as the shell is there, your good!

Re: side pipes

i live in nj and the basic rule is that it must be behind the last opening window...so as long as you put it in front of your back tire, you should be good...i know this because on my brothers big 4x4 truck he tried that butwas told by the dmv that it had to be behind his back sliding window

Re: side pipes

GOOD ol' NJ......hahah i hated standing in the newark or elizabeth DMV. And moving to Utah didnt get any better......here it goes by county. If u live in Salt lake county(salt lake city area) or utah county(orem and provo) u must have a CAT an it doesnt matter where your muffler exists. If u live basically anywhere west of those counties then you dont even need a cat nor a muffler. BUT the awful noise ticket police are on the prowl.

Re: side pipes

As far as mufflers go....TECHNICALLY, you don't HAVE to have one. There is just a db limit, at a certain distance and if your car exceeds it, ticket time.

Not that cops carry a db meter, and check. It's "up to their discretion". Not that, you convince an inspection station, or cop, otherwise, without a meter.

Now, that's here in Texas, dunno about the other 49 states. My 92 RS/ TBI 305, never got hassled, with a gutless kitty, and no muffler. Neither by cops, not the inspection station.

One larger diameter tube (Mufflex) will outflow full-length duals. So, why bother with the headache, of full-length duals?

Re: side pipes

It won't pass state inspection because the exhaust will basically go right into the passanger compartment with the windows down at a stop light.. I don't know if thats the exact reason but I know thats why my friends chevelle failed inspection numerous times.. he also got numerous tickets for em.. they did exist past the window by like 5 inches though.. they look pretty tacky on a third gen anyway IMHO... what kind of pipes would you be running? I can't imagine not having them scrape on the ground everytime u hit a bump or a driveway unless your car is raised up or something. Also wouldn't they melt the side ground fx, assuming your car has gfx..

Re: side pipes

It just dawned on me...Vipers got away with it, because there is no passenger compartment space, behind the seats. Your exhaust has to exit, behind the passenger compartment. So, short of a wall behind your seats, you can't legally have side pipes or simple side exits, like Niels car.

So, side pipes are out, I guess.
