Long tubes & standard transmissions

Hey, anyone know what long tube headers will fit on a third gen with a T-56 in it? i have a 700r4 now, but i dont want to put something on there that will close the door of ever having a six speed in my car. if anyone knows of any clearance issues, or ways to fabricate to fit, i'd appreciate it. thanks

Dont quote me but I believe the T56 is smaller than the 700R4, I dunno if clearance will be an issue or not, I doubt it.

I run the Hooker 2210s and they clear fine. I did have to trim my K member a little.

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions

I am also running hooker 2210s and I also had to do some minor clearancing on my Kmember but your motor mounts have a lot to do with this. saggy old mounts means the engine sits lower nd may not require the grinding. I then made my own custom 3" ypipe to clear the tranny.

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions

long tubes dont fit for the transmission.. it fits for the bellhousing.. the collectors dont even go past the bellhousing.. and yes, the hooker 2210's will fit with a t-5

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions

84 Should be hydraulic. 83 was the last year of mechanical. There is a sticky posted at the top of the Exhaust section that covers which headers fit with each engine/transmission combo.

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions

sorry to sound like a smart *** but you basically are fitting the headers for the bellhousing.. i got the hydro clutch.. i have to say, the slave is pretty close to the collector flange.. but it works great..

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions

all right, thanks for the info. u know i m a auto tech by profession, and most times when u pull a transmission, u pull the bellhousing with it. (not trying to be a jerk). but any way was there fabrication to get those in, i heard its a tight fit.

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions

i did have to clearance the k-member on the passenger side like everyone else.. but i got solid motor mounts so i only made about 1/8" clearance..

i hear what you say about pullin the bellhousing.. i usually just yank the tranny only.. having a lakewood bellhousing has too many bolts..

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions

ya i only roll with manuals.. i dont have a tranny jack either so i pull it myself.. the bellhousing is another 35lbs that i dont need on the 100lbs trans..

i hear that! when i did my clutch last winter i pulled just the trans out, then the bellhousing. its easier to get at the bellhousing bolts if the trans is out.

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions

Would an aftermarket trans member like UMI's for instance help out the clearance problem for the 2210's? I want LT's for my T/A cause Im not too fond of any of the catbacks for our cars and Im gonna go duels with bullets as opposed to my shorties with a flowmaster..

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions

I ended up making my own crossmember for more clearance. There was no aftermarket ones on the market at the time. I still wish Ihad more but it mainly because my car islowered. The UMIO one may gice you more then what you have to play with now but its all up to how low your car is already. You just have to realize that the long tube headerd where not designed to be run on a street car that is low to the ground.

Re: Long tubes & standard transmissions
