Hi guys, I have a stealth rammed EFI 327 w/ big roller cam, aftermarket heads, yadda yadda, that I am swapping into my 3rd gen car. I have a single 3" exhaust, but an unknown brand really quiet muffler on the back.
I want a muffler that will flow well enough but not make a ton of noise. IE no flow crappers, no horrible SLP bullets, etc.
I have used the Flowtech afterburner single in/out mufflers before and I liked them. They did not drone at all.
I also have run Magnaflow and Dynomax Ultra-flow single/in out. Same thing, no drone inside the car.
This is what the engine I am swapping out of the 2nd gen, into the third gen, sounds like with dual 2.25" exhaust with Dynomax Ultraflo's

I am having a hard time imagining what this is going to sound like w/ the ratty idle, through a single pipe.
Does anyone have sound clips of the flowtech afterburner, or a magnaflow, cross flow muffler w/ a 3" exhaust? It would be a plus if the sound clip is behind a cammed up engine, not a stock 305. The engine makes a huge difference in how loud the exhaust is, so I don't want to overshoot because it sounds quiet on someone else's car.

Have you looked into the hooker aerochamber 3" catback? People say they sound quiet enough at idle, mild exhaust note during cruise, but they scream when at WOT.
Now, I personally have pretty much ruled out this exhaust. But that is becuase I have a stock 305, and I would need something that would echo a little like a flowmaster, to get any noise at all.
BTW, supposedly the hooker way outperforms the flowmaster in airflow and backpressure.

Yeah unlike most people in this forum, I want the car to be as quiet as possible, while still not hurting flow. I have the power to back it up, the car is going to sound very radical no matter what aftermarket muffler is on it. WIth the small 2.25" exhaust and the Ultraflo's (which are on the quiet end of aftermarket mufflers), the car is still so blasting that it draws a lot more attention than I'd like. I don't want cops looking at me, or red necks giving me thumbs up when I'm driving around. This car should be running high 12s right out of the box. I built this combo for a much heavier car.
I already have a 3" mid pipe on the 3rd gen, so I don't need a cat back, I just need the muffler and tails. I also will not be running a cat since the 83 is an antique in this state, and won't need any type of safety or emissions inspection.

My car has an edelbrock kit. Last year they put a new muffler in the kit (Edelbrock cambered) which is coated. Ans the kit has 2.5" tails slash cut, like bigger 5.0 tips. and its under 300 bucks.

25 years to be an antique. I converted my 83 to 85-90 TA body before painting it, so I have the good looks of the 85-90 cars and the emissions and safety inspection exemption of an old car. Your 89 won't make it if that's what you were thinking.

I 2nd the Hooker set up, i have a friend with a LS1 with the MS4/ported heads, LTs ORY and that exhaust makes it very quite, its a little louder then a stock car.
I have a stock LT1 cat back (measures 2.75") and a DMH 3" E cut out. The car is silent driving around from inside, and very quite out side. The idle sounds kinda goofy, like puff puff puff, but you cant really hear the car running 20ft away. Cut out open, its loud and roudy.

Yeah I don't believe in cut outs. The Hooker setup sounds like the way I want to go. Does your friend's car have a cat on it? That will make a huge difference in how loud it is. I am not sure yet if I am going to be using a single high flow cat or not. I am exempt from emissions and any type of visual inspection, but I may want a cat to keep the exhaust from smelling so bad. Even as a fuel injected car w/ roller cam, the 276 retrofit hyd roller cam smells strongly of fumes at idle with my 327. I think the very short stroke of this engine is markedly affected by overlap, making it smell quite strong despite trying several different cams, and despite chip tuning around it. Having a cat to keep this down might be worth it for me.

Just remember, that if your motor is pushing out alot "richer" emissions, most cats will slowly deteoriate away to nothing. I have a motor burn through a cat in a year, and it wasnt that rich at all. Just an old motor.
Another thing you could do, is substitute a Roundbody Magnaflow where the cat is now. They are straight-thru, and very effective at being quiet. If you paired a round magnaflow where the cat used to be, and ran the 3" hooker exhaust after that, you would have a really quiet setup that flows good.

The car might see 1k miles a year, so I'm not too worried about longevity on the cat. I have a wideband so I will keep the AFR's in check as best I can. Yeah I thought about running another muffler. I don't think I will need it but we'll see how it sounds. The only time the exhaust is rich smelling is at idle, due to the long overlap/short stroke engine combo. I am running a 6E MAF setup that I tune myself, and datalogs show that cruising on the highway I am dead on. I run lean highway cruise around 15-15.3:1. The cat should be fine.

Berlinetta #2 has the best sounding cross-flow muffler on it I've ever heard. Quiet, with just a nice hint of "power" tone to it.
Caveats include it's behind a stock LG4 w/cat, and I don't know how well it flows. I don't even know what kind it is yet. I do know it has a 3" inlet and 2-1/2" outlets that were all adapted to stock 2-1/4" I-pipe and 2-1/4" tailpipes.
I'm planning on getting it out soon, will see then if it has any identifying marks on the top. I'm thinking of cutting off the inlet/outlet adapters and putting it on Berlinetta #1. I hate the Flow on there now.

Oh man, 140 hp through a 2.25" single exhaust, stepped up to a 3" inlet is not going to tell me anything about what that muffler would sound like with a 3" midpipe behind a motor w/ some snap crackle and pop to it. The engine makes a big big difference in how an exhaust sounds. I ran a flowtech afterburner on a 200 hp V6 car w/ 2.5" single exhaust, and it was totally dead silent. That same exact muffler behind my 429 Ford, same diameter pipe, was deafening. Apples to oranges.

I have a b&b catback on mine from a 4th gen, and it has a nice tone not to loud, but it makes some sweet noise new one is expensive though like a grand I got mine off my buddy for 200 bucks, and it was pratically new

i love the sound of my car at cruise(aerochamber) no radio yet so no music but having a conversation is no problem, but i can still hear that v8 just enough to know that it's there, guess it fits this young guy to a tee aswell.

the aerochamber isnt loud and if the magnaflow is quieter than the aerochamber it would be whisper quiet, hardly (if at all) louder than stock.

I can only go by what you guys tell me since I have never run an upgraded exhaust on the weirdo 3rd gen 2 into 1 into 2 exhaust before.
I think I'll get the aero chamber, see what it sounds like, and if it's too loud for me still I'll run a resonator up front.

If you want absolute silence run the dynomax system, it is hardly louder than stock. My aerochamber doesn't drone at highway speeds(2800) rpm behind a mild treefitty shorty headers and 3" exhaust no cat.

The engine doesn't make as much difference as people make out. Cat vs no-cat makes more difference. Are you saying you ran the same single 2.5" muffler behind that 429?

No, duals, but I mean it was an earth shattering difference in volume.
Here's a more direct comparison: I have run the flowmaster 82-92 Camaro/Firebird cross flow muffler on a 3800 V6, and also a Cadillac 4.9 V8 (both 2.5" single exhausts). Both cars were very quiet. That same cross flow flowmaster muffler on a V8 w/ any kind of oomph is blasting.

I had the 3 1/2" Aerochamber on my car for a short time. Then Magnaflow came out with their 3 1/2" muffler of the straight through design. That was the style I was looking for and put the Magnaflow on. The Magnaflow was quieter than the Aerochamber. In fact we were all amazed at how quiet it was until you put the pedal to the metal.

I have a 3" Borla crossflow muffler on my 305 TPI. Its so quiet that when we ran the video back from the track that all you could hear was the chirp from the tire, it was extremely quiet. The tradeoff is for the flow, the Borla is one of the best flowing mufflers out there. I bought it and had it installed for $150 total (they COST $250 from summit) because everyone was putting dronemasters on their cars at that time.
I had a stock type 2.5" Walker crossflow muffler (the guys that make Dynomax) with a 3" pipe and that was the best sounding 3rd gen muffler i have ever heard. The only thing was the small inlet was constricting airflow and had to be replaced with a larger 3" inlet.
There is a noticeable power increase, i was finally able to roast my friends stealth with my auto with 2.73 gears.
I heard the Borla on a 350 truck and it is really quiet at idle, you can tell there is an engine there but there is no droning or interior resonance really.
If you don't have a cat on your car then all bets are off....
I also have a flowmaster on the 87 i bought and there is a loud drone and interior resonance at any speed, including idle. Its like sitting on a muffler and driving.
IMO, Magnaflow sound ugly, i am sure they are designed for flow but never heard a good clip of them sounding nice.

I wanted to find something different than the typical Flowmaster sound. To me the Flowmaster just sounds like a louder version of a stock Iroc. even with my ZZ4 and headers the Flowmaster just doesn't do it for me. I ended up buying the 3" in 2.5" out cross flow Aero chamber and I installed it last night. The one negative to this muffler is WEIGHT. It is the heaviest muffler I have ever seen, it probably honestly weighs 40 pounds. It must be made of 1/8" plate.
It sure is quiet, behind a 2 3/4" mandrel bent cat back and a piece of crap 305 TPI long block w/ 350 TPI manifolds. It is slightly louder than stock at low rpms, and louder than stock at high RPM's, but not by much.
So basically it is what I asked for. Thanks to everyone who recommended the aero chamber when I said I wanted a quiet exhaust. I don't think you will be able to hear it with the windows up, which is what I wanted.

It sounds really terrible because its a peanut cammed 305 (it seriously sounds like a wimpy V6 because of the tiny cam when he revs it) but you can at least tell from the video that the aerochamber is very quiet. You guys weren't kidding that it's a very quiet muffler. I'm going to give one a shot and see how I like it.

hehe Thanks, thats my car we are talking about lmfao. My aerochamber is quiet true, but part of it is the sound quality on my camera (digital camera, not even a real camera).
