Bad luck with headers...

SO i found out the other day that i had to again buy another set of headers... this will be my 3rd set in a little over 2 months.
The first set just got legitimately damaged by a "custom" y-pipe that i had made.
And the second set ended up being the wrong size? (Flowtech...) and was rubbing up against the frame..

I found a third set that i think should work but could you guys check it for me??
http://www.jegs.com/i/Hedman/500/68481/10002/-1

It said on the Hedmans website that they would come with a y-pipe, but i wont actually be ordering them from the Jegs website. So in case they dont come with one could someone link me to the stock y-pipe dimensions or at least a pic so i can have one made???

Any reason why you haven't considered the Hooker 2055's, a board favorite?

Re: Bad luck with headers...

Oh, you should've said that. Well you could always cut them off the 2055's and weld up the holes but that will probably start the rusting process that much faster. There are other headers that are made without the AIR tubes on them, I just dont have the part # for them. If I have some time later I'll do some looking around.

Do you need a Y-pipe, or do you already have one?

and the uncoated but super cheap:

If you need the Y-pipe:

If you look at the 2055's and these 2460's you'll see the pipes run the same way, the only real difference is the collector.

If the flowtechs were rubbing against the body, its probably because of sagging motor mounts. The have flange warping problems, but usually the fitment is good.

Re: Bad luck with headers...

I have a set of Edelbrocks that I had to work with a bit (a few sets of gaskets) but otherwise are working great and fit well.

The short answer, yes. How long will it take to actually rust through and leak? That I cant answer, but it will take awhile. Remember these fancy coatings have only been around since the '80's. Uncoated headers have been around forever and people have used them for years with no problems. As far as looks, you cant beat the coated headers though. It just depends on what you're looking for and what you can afford. Personally, if you can afford it I would get the coated.

No particular reason for the cut/welded area to rust any quicker than the rest of the headers.

None that compare to the value of what you get with the 2055's. Particularly because of the great y-pipe that comes with them.

Dyno Don's seem to be a good value, though. He'll make them with or without the A.I.R. tubes. I believe his are only 1-7/8" primary tubes, which would take a healthy 305 or 350 to be worthy of them.

The other possibility is the Hedman dual cat headers. Nice mandrel-bent down-pipes to the cats, you don't have to use dual cats ("Y" the pipes together). They also have the A.I.R. tubes - same solution as the 2055's if you don't want the A.I.R. tubes.

Other than the fact that you'll have to grind off any paint that is on there to do the welding. Even if you re-spray them, it will rust faster. Trust me, former body man here. Im not just making **** up.
