Alright, so I ordered my Hedman shorty headers from summit (91 t/a L98), got them today, and they have the wrong flange? they have a 3 bolt ball and socket flange, when the car just has a 2 bolt, the ad didnt say anything about 2 or 3 bolts, just that it was a ball and socket flange, so... I called them and tuff, thats what it is, and I either need to get the new flanges installed, or get their Y-pipe, which if it is a nice Y-pipe I would benefit anyways, 'cause my stock one is kind of hobbled together, so any input would be nice. And I guess my question off the bat is...Anyone using the HED-17470 Y-pipe? and is it a good performing one, because that will replace my stock crappy one, and allow me to use these headers HED-68470. This is all referenced off of Summitracing.com The y-pipe is only 99 dollars. Any input would be appreciated, Thanks.

 

As is stated so many times (especially on the Exhaust forum), nobody makes headers intended to bolt to the original y-pipe on our cars.

You either modify the existing y-pipe (rarely a good idea), or get the y-pipe made for your headers (if one exists).

Don't use that y-pipe. I have it and was very disappointed. Have one fabbed up for you and you'll be much happier. I have those headers too, and I love them.

Ok, Well, I was just looking at the headers, and it looks like the bolt holes are really close to the pipe? Is there any clearance issues there? And also it doesnt even look like they will match the ports on the heads? Are you still using that Y-pipe? what's wrong with it? Wonder how much it would cost to have a y-pipe fabbed up? Where does the o2 sensor go?

 

Well... I got to thinking, since I am going to have to have a y-pipe fabbed up, why not just send these back and get longtubes? If they dont bolt to the stock y-pipe, why do people even put shorties on?

 

No, the bolt holes are fine. And no, they don't match the ports on my heads either. I believe they were square ports on the heads right? I was just mad at the time and since I don't really care if my car is a high performer or not, considering I'm only 17 and the car has so many other problems anyways..But I am still using that y-pipe. I had to have the muffler shop hack it in a few places so it would line up and bolt to the collectors because the angles were wrong. It would probably be anywhere between $100-$150 for a custom y-pipe and you're better off. I had an 02 bung put in the back side of the driver side header. Haven't driven the car for more than a day with the headers, so I don't know how the 02 sensor is doing there. I've read that the placement of it will make a difference and didn't know that until after, but I figured since the muffler shop who did it for me were very knowledgeable, I could trust them.

If you do LT's, be ready to spend some money for true duals or something like mw66nova has because ground clearance with them are a pain in the ***.

 

longtubes usually require alot more work to put on, and decrease ground clearence. Also make it near impossible to use a catalytic convertor (especially in the stock location like some states require).

So for people that want a little bolt-on performance that can keep their stock exhaust routing for ground clearence, and also remain emissions compliant, shorties can be a much better option.

 

Ok, some good advice here, I still dont know what I want to do, I dont think I really want to mess with LT's, but I am probly gonna remove the cat, and A.I.R. is gone also. I have the whole car stripped, inside and out, well interior is back in, but doing a full rebuild of the car, leaving the block in though, so ya, just trying to get it back together, with some performance, Full port and siamese of the intake, and porting the 083 heads.

Where is the best location for the o2 sensor?
