true duals or side exit?
i have an 89 trans am gta and i was looking at doing true duals. i was told doing side exit exhaust right before the back tire was a dumb idea. is there ways around this?

There is a lot of guys that have true duals without sidepipes. Have you checked catalogs like Summit or Jegs for what you are looking for? Some people just had their stuff custom done at a muffler shop.

I'm using sidepipes with an H crossover on the Nova, for the pimp factor.

I say stick with a single 3" catback... Cheaper, easier, more ground clearance, lighter, and just as much power. I'd bet the Flowmaster American Thunder catback will give you the sound you want.
Re: true duals or side exit?
I've got 2.5inch true duals on my GTA and they go properly over the axle on both sides. Ground clearance suffers a little but it sounds great. The sound of your exhaust, however, depends very much on numerous factors incl. engine, cam, state of tune, degree of silencing, catalytic convertors or not, etc. Being honest, at the moment I'm tempted to make a new true dual 3inch system with H pipe and turn downs before the rear axle.

My next exhayst system will be a X pipe and side exits with spiral flow mufflers(because outlaw flowmasters are too$$$). I am still trying to find that perfect tip for the sides.

Re: true duals or side exit?
A buddy of mine had side exit exhaust on his 91 camaro. It ran rich and whenever we were at a stoplight it would just about gag you with the fumes. Just something to think about. lol
