I'm wondering which combo I should go with. It's an 83 Trans Am street car/DD with a 350 Chevy. I don't know what type of heads are on it, but I'm using the stock manifolds currently. My stock y-pipe just broke so I'm looking to change to headers while I'm at it. I don't need AIR/emissions stuff. I'd like to know which one would bolt on easier and which ones the better deal. What modifications would I have to do to fit either one? I can get a muffler shot to put the end of the Y on, so that's not a problem, but the headers I heard need modification.

Ideas? I've heard about the Hookers, but they're out of the budget.

yeah, sorry, i know i put FLT twice in the title

hey man im upgrading to the hedman headers 1 5/8" tube because they bigger than the flowtech 1.5" , the flowtech are garbage, they are cheap price wise , but are a pain to change plugs with and snap the plug caps back on, im lookin at the 68470 hedman headers because they seem very straight tubing

Wow, this is an old thread. Knightmare, did you get the hedman combo? I'm curious because I bought the same combo a while back and haven't had the time to actually install it. If you did go with that, I'd like to know how the install went and if you got good results.

i havent either yet im still waiting for them to arrive at my dealer, well the flowtech look good BUT the interfere with changing plugs and i think its number 5 or 7 cyl that i learned a couple few new works tryin to snap the cap back on the plug, but anyways the hedman ones are bigger tubes 1 5/8 rather than 1.5", and the collector is 3" rather than 2.5, and the y pipe is 3" rather than 2.5,and the tubes on the hedman are alot straighter and dont go around the city on the right bank, so if you have a 3" magnaflow cat back it will flow really nicely im thinking about 50hp gain with the magnaflow kit ill post pics for u when i get em

Old indeed!
I don't even have that engine anymore.
If I remember, we just had the broken Y replaced with a stock Y HACKED into place. It was complete garbage, but wasn't anything I could do about it.
I have another engine with true duals now.
I don't know what these headers are. I bought the setup from a local member.

Question: why is the O2 only on the # 5 cylinder instead of being on the collector? I'd say the shop that installed the bung made a boo boo.

lol. i've had that question before and also thought the same. the hole isn't drillled out, it's just welded.
the pic is before we ground it down. i'm driving right now without O2.
i have a bung waiting to be properly welded/drilled on when the weather is better.

Actually, the hedman y-pipe is 2.5" which was disappointing to find out. However, I decided it wasn't a big deal because at the moment I'm running a stock 305 (LG4) and I don't plan to go beyond the 300-400 hp range with this car, even after I swap the engine. I got a dynomax catback for next to nothing and a magnaflow muffler and cat to complete the rest of the exhaust (will be selling the dynomax muffler from the kit). It's 2.5" piping but I don't expect it to be a problem. In fact, my neighbor who has been a mechanic for many years now and restores cars all the time, seems to think that anything bigger than 2.5" would be overkill and may actually hurt performance. Coming from all stock components though, I think I'd get a significant improvement no matter what I did.

Those hedman mid length ones work jsut fine, and a new pipe is easily fabbed and mde quite a bit bigger. the flowtech stuff is just junk, they are the same as some of the chinese crap out there and the edelbrock tes headers.

That's a 3" stepped to 2.75 and it easily clears the pan

Yes but I want to use the factory set up from the cat back.. And my headman's are long tubes.. That's why I was asking about 17478 Ypipe. Has anyone else done this? http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/50017534.jpg
I want to know if I can attach these to the headman long tubes and than run the factory cat back set up?
