Headman Shorty question
Do these headers work with the stock Y pipe? I am really short on cash, it would be nice if I could just go grab one from the JY and slap it on for now, planning on going back to stock (until I can afford a nice exhaust) because right now my exhaust is sorta just hanging there. Thanks!

Re: Headman Shorty question
I would except I am running a 327, and I have that special issue with loosing a dipstick, the rest is possible, I have WP Dart heads, I may have to look around for a dipstick with a large bend in it, my JY said I can take the entire exhaust off a car, manifolds and all for $30, given that I am running straight pipes right now and thats illegal in NY, have to do something.
EDIT, I found out by photo compairison that I accually have Hooker competition headers, so this question is nil now anyways

Re: Headman Shorty question
if you are talking about the issue with having a driver's side dipstick, there are remedies for that. Cheap ones. I know because I have done it. The stock dipstick will work just fine with the stock manifolds.

Re: Headman Shorty question
There are 4 ways to fix the dipstick.
1. Most expensive: Lokar or similar flexible dipstick tube.
2. Most labor: Some motors, I have no idea what they came from, had the dipstick in the oil pan instead of the block. We have an old junk 305 with this type of oil pan on it.
3. Cheap and low labor: If you have the correct tools, you can get a piece of brake line and bend it from the block up around the manifold, flare the top and get a dipstick from junkyard or parts store that is close to being the same length. Mark the oil level and be done.
Now #4. This is what I used. I read on here it could be done and I took the chance. I done this on a 90 RS camaro. I bought the car with the original 305 locked up. I swapped to a 71 350 block.
With the manifold off the head, install the dipstick tube in the driver's side as usual. Install the dipstick. Now go ahead and install the manifold with the 2 outer bolts. Mark where the dipstick will hit the manifold. I then removed the back heat shield from the manifold. Install the manifold like normal with some felpro manifold gaskets. When you tighten it down, it will crush the dipstick some, but it will not shut it. You will still be able to get the dipstick in and out.
If you have a grinder, it wouldnt hurt to grind some on the manifold where the dipstick tube will go. This will give it more clearence.
Now as a disclaimer, I have done this twice without problem. I wouldnt do this on a show car, but it works perfectly for what I need it to. I wish I had taken a pic or two, but currently thats not an option.

sounds good, but if thats the case, I may have a dipstick that works anyways. Can you take a picture of yours just to use as a reference?

If you have the time, do some searching on here. That is where I found that it could be done. If I remember there was a picture or two. Good luck

Re: Headman Shorty question
On mine. That is what must have been done. Mine is between valvle cover and manifold. I just don't like how the vallve cover had to be ground out a little. It tighens down but had to get the t bolts because can't get socket down on it. Also hard to get dipstick in. I might try a dipstick from a vortec truck. They flare out and are long. I think they will fo around manifold
Re: Headman Shorty question
One other dip stick solution that works. Bend your own tube using brake line as already suggested. Change the oil and filter so you know you have the right oil level. Cut a piece of speedometer inner cable and slip it into the tube until you hear it touch bottom. Bring it out, and use a dremel to make a small ring around the proper oil level. Then cut off the extra cable from the top and use on old dipstick handle ring. (I brazed the cable to a 2" piece of old dip stick.) DickJ
