Hedman Headers / cutting the A.I.R system..
I am about to install the Hedman headers on my car soon but i wanted to know what needs to be done to the mechanic so i dont get over charged. As of right now i have a 92 B4C camaro with the l98 700r4 stock with dual cats. Well none of the smog lines are hooked up to the cats so its like they are there. My questions is when the mechanic installs the headers which way would be best of removing the extra A.I.R system. Can he just take everything out without removing the pump or does he need some steps. Im not caring about smog right now all i want out of my car is to have the Hedma 3" connectors with the 3" y pipe that i am custom making and straight back to my 3" i beam for the Borla exhaust that i have. Please help with any information as i will be headed out this weekend to complete this project. Thanks

Re: Hedman Headers / cutting the A.I.R system..
1) Why would you pay someone to do work that doesn't know how to do it?
2) If you go telling a mechanic exactly how to do his job, chances are he's going to get pissed at you for telling him his business, and he won't do a good job anyway. He's under the assumption that, if you knew how to do it, you'd be doing it yourself. But if you go spouting off a ton of specific instructions, then that's going to be offensive to him.
3) Why aren't you doing this yourself? 99 times out of 100, paying someone else to work on your car ends up costing you more time, more money, and in the end you have to fix what they screwed up anyway! No one ever tinkers with my cars but me - I've learned my lessons with paying someone else the hard way!
That said ... I'm assuming you are referring to the metal tubing that comes off the cats to the AIR tubes/pump. When I did mine, I cut them off about 1 inch from the cat, pinched the ends closed with Vise Grips, and then I took a torch and a coat hanger ($10 home welding method) and I melted the coat hanger into the end thus welding the pinched slit shut so I wasn't leaking exhaust.
It's not fancy, but took me 5 minutes, cost me nothing, and did the job - with lowering springs, no one has a small enough head to get under my car and see it anyway! And if they do, I smack 'em! Fondle my woman, but DON'T TOUCH MY CAMARO!

Re: Hedman Headers / cutting the A.I.R system..
Well he does know what he is doing but he wants to remove the whole smog pump. The reason is because my headers dont have the adapters for the air system. Do you know of any headers that due or how did you do it.
Re: Hedman Headers / cutting the A.I.R system..
Just leave the pump there but not connected.

Re: Hedman Headers / cutting the A.I.R system..
Okay so is that what you did because idk if people understand what im saying about the tubes and line coming from the manifolds and what they did with them because every camaro i see pictures of with headers the air system is either fully deleted or stopped somewhere. My question is were do i stop it at or is there something i can do to do it right. Does anyone know the steps to do the header swap and deleting the lines properly.... Thanks for the help

What adapters? Do they have the tubes on the primaries or not? Like torque-is-good said remove pump and re-route belt and get longer belt. Or get a delete pulley, but it seems late for that since you're gonna do this this weekend.

Here's the way to delete the smog pump with a different belt routing: www.thirdgen.org/serpentine
Or, you can use a smog pump delete pulley which costs about $30
If swapping from stock manifolds to headers that don't have AIR tubes, the only thing left is the metal hardline from the cat(s), that is what I was describing how I sealed with the torch and coat hanger (poor man's welder).

The pulley sounds the best to do and I was wondering if u have the right part number I need for my 92 Camaro b4c 5.7l 350...also what does everyone think about the performance pros n cons about installing the headers with 3" everything and deleting the smog system...thanks for the input guys

Trust me on this, you're not the first one to slap an exhaust onto these 20+ year old cars
there is a sticky about smog delete and which belt to order. The part # provided just barely fits but you can get it on.

Re: Hedman Headers / cutting the A.I.R system..
Pros and cons...on paper you'll gain some HP..but you probably won't feel it but you'll hear it. At least you'll clean up the engine bay and get alittle more room in there. Get rid of the FI and go carbed (here comes the hornets nest!) with the exhaust, then you might have a "seat of the pants feel" but that's a whole other story... If you have a B4c to begin with.. why F' with it? Probably worth more in stock condition. Oh BTW see Modern Day Muscle for a smog delete pulley
Great people to deal with.

Considering the cost difference, I'd sell the ones with A.I.R. tubes & buy some without the tubes that cost less than half. You'd make $ on selling the A.I.R. tube ones or sell them cheaper to someone who needs that kind & it'd still pay for the new ones without tubes. And you wouldn't have to been modding them. Win-win for both people.

Re: Hedman Headers / cutting the A.I.R system..
I have the set of A.I.R. tubes I was gonna use to mod a set of headers like you are talking about doing, but never did. These were the closest I could ever find that would be similar in stock configuration, as far as "aiming" their outputs towards the stock down tubes.
If your interested in them, shoot me your Zip Code & I bet I can get them to your house for less than half the price you'd spend on those Summit ones.
