how do i make my exhaust as quiet as possible without hurting horsepower
sounds counter-intuitive i know but I like the idea of having my car be at least mostly quiet and whatever sound that does come out sound nice, I'd want to install cut-outs for when i am in the mood to hear the power but honestly most of the time i want it to sound like something i could start up at night (our garage is under the bedrooms-split level) without waking someone up, or rev up without the cops catching notice and wanting to come see what i have under the hood. I figure the engine would be a 350 or 383 with a mild/medium cam and some afr or well worked vortec heads, headers of course, no forced induction... yet.
Any ideas?
i had wondered about using a double muffler setup or some supertrapp mufflers on the tips of a standard performance exhaust.

More mufflers the better. Straight thru types. I put 4 on my car, 2 on each bank of the duals and it does alot to quiet things down. 2 bullets and 2 ultraflo round case designs. Still loud but alot better than it was on single bullets on each bank.
Motor type however can have great influence on sound. High compression obviously can have louder effects but size of cam and heads will also change sound. I had 2 different heads cam combos on same turbo motor and sound was completely different. Same turbos but slightly different sized exhaust housing. Cam was .564" vs .640" and 195 cc heads vs 245 cc heads. Same compression. Bigger head cam combo was much louder.
So hard to say what exhaust mods would be necessary to keep it quiet but more straight thru types you have will quiet things down.

ive got 4 on my car too. i started off with flowmaster super 44's, and an exhaust that dumped under the car. way too loud for normal street driving, IMO. a few months ago i added 2 summit bullet style mufflers, and ran the dual exhaust up & over the rear. its so much quieter now. i love it. still has a nice sound to it, especially when getting on it. i dont feel any power loss at all.
i just got tired of rattling the windows in the house with the loud exhaust, & normal driving became annoying. i completely understand people wanting a quiet, free-flowing exhaust.

wouldnt happen to have any sound clips of either or both would ya?.. or possibly a video where you can hear em?.. cause peoples definition of quiet can vary a lot.. nice to see that i am not the only person who has thought of going the other direction with the exhaust sound though, i couldnt find anything about it with a search

thats a perfect example of different definitions of quiet... I love the sound but they are far from quiet like i am sayin, dont know what a couple of em would sound like but the ones i heard that have a single muffler sounded pretty much like a growl that easily became a roar with a little throttle.
thanks though, if i wanted a great sounding muffler they would be high on my list

Hooker Maximum Flow, the 20" long one, I have a set up single 3" that I put on once in a while when I get tired of the Flowmaster or the GailBanks one, I also use Vibrant 3" resonator in place of the cat and it smooth's out the sound allot it takes out the raspy sound of the no cat setup.
If you don't mind a single exit that's the best muffler to use, if you can find one, they don't make that long one anymore I believe .

right on, ya i certainly dont mind a single exit, although a cat is not something i am going to do without - right now a new one is in order though.

I put on a stock 4th gen exhaust, it's very quiet now. Our garage is under the bedrooms too. I can start it up with my 1 year old son sleeping above, and he never wakes up. I put down 450 to the wheels on 6psi, and I really can't feel much of a power loss with the factory system. I pulled off a GMMG so I know what loud is! lol

right on, i was wondering if a 4th gen would bolt up without mods... what did you do to get it to fit?
