Magnaflow 16450 y pipe questions

Hey all the Y pipe on my 87 L98 has finally given up, I was going to use the walker direct fit y pipe when someone recommended the magnaflow 16450. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mpe-16450

Are there any fitment issues with this y pipe?
Can the starter still be changed with this y pipe? The stock starter and y pipe on the 5.7 is a puzzle but it can be done.
I am using the stock manifolds currently, the rust on the bolts is keeping me from going to headers...

Re: Magnaflow 16450 y pipe questions

I have this pipe on my car and had no fitment issues. The starter can be removed as usual. The only fitment issue I had, and it is minor is that the pipe was touching the plastic wheel well dust shield and I had to trim it back a bit so it would not melt. But it is a very nice piece.

thanks, I'm going to order this one. Just had too many times where the exact fit required all sorts of modifications...

your link to Summit says there is no bung for the O2 sensor, is that because your O2 is mounted into the cast iron manifold?

You are correct, it is mounted on the manifolds in a stock TPI exhaust.

I sell that y-pipe, and even have one on my GTA - quality SS construction, great fit, and a great transition of pipes into the cat (unlike the factory).

Can't go wrong.

Re: Magnaflow 16450 y pipe questions

My car is 1990 iroc, original 5.0 block replaced 4 bolt 5.7, I was thinking of using the 16450 y pipe, when I look at applications, on Summits site, it states 88-89, I was under the impression that the 90 was identical, the Walker also says 88-89, I would like to go magnaflow front to back with the mpe 36019 california 3000 Cat, and 16829 cat back exhaust. Are there any issues with the Y pipe or using the single 3" Cat ( ground clearance ) vs. the original 2 cat configuration which seemed prone to finding speed bumps itself. Just found 3rd gen site and it is a very welcome resource.

One of the pipes will be like 2 inches short of the manifold on the passenger side for some reason on the 1990 if you use this setup. I saw a few complaints online...

what size pipe is this magnaflow?

Could that be because they are putting it on a non 350 or 305 ho manifold?
I thought the pass side was different on the lower performance models?

It is 2.5 off the manifolds into a 3 inch pipe. It is all mandrel bent.

Re: Magnaflow 16450 y pipe questions

re shortness of pipe, pulled out the old parts book, for 1990 at least, all 5.7 and the 5.0F equipped with mk6 manual trans the manifold p/n's are (LH) 14094063, (RH) 14094064, where as the 5.0F with m39 or autos have a different (RH) 10128448 manifold that is shared with the 5.0E, the E uses a different (LH) 10046123 exclusive to that model. possible that the cars with problems are 5.0 auto, M39 manual, or E model, is it the passenger side that is the problem?
