Headers/Exhaust for 89IROC

I have an 89 Iroc. Don't kow a whole lot about cars, am
interested what u guys would reccomend on a emissions legal exhaust/header set up for my car for a reasonable price. I Was thinking along the lines of flowmaster for cat-back exhaust system. Noticed there is two different types in the new summit catalogue. One reads as 'TPI singe converter' and the other reads 'low output, single converter'....what is the diference, and which is better? I also wanted to know whats better in the area of cat. converters. (and a good perfromance chip to use) Motor is 305 ci

Alot of it depends on how much money you have to spend...

I'm gonna assume you have adequate funds for my suggestions:

-As far as headers go, I am planning to get either Hooker or SLP ceramic coated headers. I've heard the ceramic coats are worth the money because they last forever, but they are more expensive (add about $300 or so). In the end, figure on having about $800-$1000 (depending on the shop) for full installation, unless you plan on doing the install yourself.

-As far as exhaust goes, Flowmaster is by far the most popular brand... and for a good reason. You can't beat their performance / sound for the money, they are the best deal. Go with 80 Series for aggressive and loud sounding. But shop around for other brands, alot of it depends on personal taste. I'm not sure about high flow catback brands, but the shop can install one for you if you ask them too. Expect to drop about $400 for the whole setup w/ install.

As for the "TPI single output" vs. "Low output" converters... I'm pretty sure the "Low output" is referring to the V6 engines, but I could be wrong... the shop can help you with that.

-And finally, the performance chips. I know for a fact that JET Performance Parts puts out a solid upgrade performance chip. It's called the "Stage 1" and runs about $250 with tax and all. I am planning on installing one, so I can't tell you how great it works, but I have my hopes...

Your total for the whole upgrade should be about $1600-$1700 or so... and trust me, it will make a HUGE difference... worth every penny!

I'll agree the JET chip is a better chip than HyperTech but u could just increase your timing and get almost the same results really, and it would be alot less $$. If u want some more information on chips, check these out: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...threadid=73018 https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...&threadid=2357
Its always going to be best to know how to custom make them yourself or if u know some1 that can.

Oh yeah, get Flowmaster.

Sorry, but if you want sound and PERFORMANCE, the Hooker cat-back out flows the flowmaster. And to me sounds better. There are sound clips on this board, check them out, one is in my signature. As far as headers, SLP is the best but rather pricey. Whatever you do I recommend getting them coated.

SOME1, ANY1, post something (facts) that says the Aerochamber flows better. I don't mean something from the companies either. As for sound, your going to have to see which u like better, they are both a good sounding exhaust, but different. I like Flowmasters sound better.

I read an article on upgrading a 3rdGen with JET equipment. I can't recall the magazine... but they took a tired '89 Trans Am, with like 118,000 miles on it, slapped on a Stage 1 chip, Air fuel kit, and some new spark plugs, and it resulted in a moderately impressive increase in throttle response and HP....

It's just simply been proven that they do help (how much can be debated, and depends on the car's condition)...

Now I do suppose a Stage 2 chip could work for him, but that's if he has a cooling stat and a less restrictive exhaust... so by all means, if he would prefer Stage 2, he'll have to take care of those two things. I don't know how big a difference there is between Stage 1 and 2.

Anyway... having read about them, they seem to be a nice little mod for $200.

I tried searching for the post that listed the cfm of mufflers, but after 10 mins, I gave up. The search on this site sucks. Anways, I know I have seen it, and I know the Hooker outflowed the flowmaster, but there was one muffler on the list that outflowed the Hooker, but I forget which.

The "Low Output" refers to the 2 1/4 cat that came on the TBI exhaust systems.
