Oily residue coming from tail pipe

Car hasnt ran regularly in the last 5 years do to me taking a job that required me to be away from my house 9 months a year. Ive had it running and letting it idle and warm up the past week. I got these black streaks forming behind the tails pipes as you can see. bad intake gasket maybe? there is no Cat on the exhaust it was straight piped with Hooker headers btw. any info to point in the right direction is appreciated.

Are you getting any smoke with that soot? Black smoke would be running rich, whiteish smoke would be oil.
From the looks of it seems like soot from running too rich. It looks like what was in my buddies clogged catalytic convertors when he had a couple bad injectors and was running puke rich. His car sat for months at a time in between starts. IMHO you could be a victim of ethanol fuel sitting too long and messed up something in the fuel system.

Re: Oily residue coming from tail pipe

Because you're just letting the engine come up to operating temp by just letting it idle, the exhaust forms a lot of internal condensation when it cools off. I think what you're seeing is the moisture/soot build up blowing out of the tail pipe.

Instead of just letting it idle, take it out on the interstate for 10 miles or so. My guess is the soot will go away.

Re: Oily residue coming from tail pipe

My car did that when the engine actually was failing. In my case, it was oil spraying out of the pipes. The HFT cam & lifters were eating each other and all that sharp cast iron shrapnel circulated throughout the engine. It was embedded in the skirts of the pistons and grooved the cylinder walls, yet the engine still passed compression and leakdown tests (at TDC).

Yours is just condensation and soot. Do like paulo57509 said - take it out for a "drive it like you stole it" ride.

Re: Oily residue coming from tail pipe

yea i will, car needs a tune up and front suspension work before that happens, all that sitting has messed up my baby, I took it out on the street in front of my house and it was a rough ride . whatever time and money and she will be right again lol

Re: Oily residue coming from tail pipe

If you car is sitting for months full of corn-gas, this could at least be contributing to your problems. Dump a bottle of Techtron fuel system cleaner in the tank and drive most of that crap gas out. Then before your next 9 month absence, fill it up with ethanol-free gas. E15 is OK for a car driven regularly, but degrades over time and cause problems in a car that is parked for months.

Mine is stored off-season with alcohol free gas. Use it in all my yard equipment too.

I would not run E15 in anything that was not designed for it, and 3rd gens were not. E10 is OK, but I'd stay away form the new E15.
