Budget minded complete new exhaust
Budget minded complete new exhaust
I am looking to replace everything after the manifolds on my 89 RS with 124k miles. I am leaning toward a Dynomax cat-back system because Jeg's has them much cheaper than Flowmaster or Hooker and SLP. I think I'll get their catalytic converter too. Now I know SLP has a Y-pipe, are there any others that can beat them on price? Am I forgettin anything? Oh yeah the car is daily driven and has the stock 305. Can anyone give me the code for this motor. I am new to the lingo and the only thing I've recognized so far is L98! Thanks

no replies to the Dynomax system? In the Jeg's catalog it is just a hair over $150! Since my car is an 89 RS and unmodified I don't think I need an extremely high performance system because I won't benefit from it enough to justify the $. Any thoughts???????????

Getting a 3" now won't hurt you, and besides it'll be there in the future when you do other mods. Besides the headers would benefit more with the 3" I would assume. At least this way you won't spend money now on a smaller setup and then later have to go to 3". I'd recommend the Hooker cat-back by the way, sound clip is in the sign.

I have the Dynomax and love it, great bang for the buck. I say go for it. Great sound and not too loud and install was a snap. I did have to drop the panhard rod and the right rear wheel off of the jackstand to get it in. I did it on the ground. Headers, high flow cat and you're set.

The exhaust is ordered. I got a Hedman Y pipe, Dynomax cat and cat-back exhaust system. I hope their won't be too much fuss. The shop didn't sound too enthused to do the work. Oh well, I can find someone else
$ talks.
$ talks. CRUM50: Don't be concerned over a loss of torque with the 3" system. I just installed SLP y-pipe ($199), Catco 3" converter ($116), and RAVIN 3" cat-back system ($299). Noticeable increase in hp and torque.
I in the same boat here. I need an all new exhaust cheap. When I make that statement what exactly does that comprise of. Headers, a Y pipe, a cat, ad a cat-back system? Anything else?...the newbie has spoken....
...oh yeah and who carries the 3" hooker cat back system? I only see a 2.5" system at jegs. Also I see that they are for 305s. Does this mean in 4 months when I change over to a 350 that I will need a new exhaust again? Is there anything I should know before buying the whole package now rather then waiting till later.

I got the 3" Dynomax system on my 305 and I am satisfied at best. COuld be much louder, very quiet, and dull sounding. Power increase was minimal, maybe 5HP or so. If I had to do it over again I'd do something different, but the install was real easy, so who knows!

How cheap?
Headman headders (w/air) pn HOK-2055: $350
Catco universal cat: $50
Flowmaster Force II 3" catback (single out): $225
The nice thing with the flow system is the y pipe is 3 piece, so its easy to install. The Dynomax should be a one piece so its hard to get over the axle without a lift. I gotta get the middle connection welded this year, though. The clamp hangs too low.
