exhaust performance?

I have a '87 Iroc (305 TPI) that needs to have the exhaust system replaced, still has stock system. I am looking at both SLP and Hooker cat back systems. What type of performance can I expect from each system respectively aside from just sound improvement. I' ve read that if an exhaust system has too little backpressure low end torque is sacrificed. This is the last thing I want since I have little to begin with. What type of system should I be looking at to improve sound but not at the expense of low end torque? Any additional exhaust system recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Both hooker and slp are realy good so whateva u want go for it, I realy dont think the cat backs make u lose torque but def help in the hp area with some 10 extra hp high end

I'd say go for the Hooker, it's cheaper for one. I definately noticed it pulled harder once I got it put on and this was the day after I got 3:73s installed. Backpressure won't help torque or anything else, you don't want any backpressure. Get yourself some headers first if you don't have them.

mark, if you keep posting about the hooker cat-back I will have to just go and buy one for my car. Seriously I am thinking of going with the hooker set up. Im not sure which headers to go with. Hedman, or hooker. long or shorties.

Thanks very much for the replies. In addition, can someone tell me what a Y-pipe is and if an aftermarket one, such as the SLP, improve performance also. Thanks.

if you really want performance out of a cat back you cant go wrong with SLP. i had slowmaster on my car and the best i could run was a 15.2, i switched to the SLP setup and i now run a 14.9. i would accpect the hooker to be about the same as the slowmaster.

That's pretty impressive. What was the MPH differances? was the catback the only differance? Did they both have 3" pipes?

the 1/4 mile mph went up alittle, 90.0 to 90.8, but the 1/8th went up 70.? to 72.? and the 1/8 ET droped also. it is definitely faster i ran a 2 15.0's and a 3 14.9. i even ran a 15.1 with my friend riding with me that night.

Delta Series Flowmaster if you'd rather have performance than just sound.

I'd bet that the drop in ET is more attributable to driver improvement or better conditions than to the muffler swap. The similar MPH numbers generally indicate similar HP. I'm not saying that it isn't stronger, but .3 secs is a lot when only going from one performance type exhaust to another.
