Headers Question???

I've browsed these exhaust threads and I've noticed that the 305 (stock) headers are the same as those on the 350 L98. Now that I'm closely coming to a decision on my motor I'm wondering will the stock headers do any harm to my motor that will be pushing about 430 to the wheels? Thanks

Stock headers?????? Oh, and you won't be pushing 430HP to the wheels assuming you're referring to manifolds. What's your setup by the way to predict 430 RWHP, that's quite a bit.

I'm not much of an engine person but I've talk to a nearby machinst/engine builder. He said he could build me anything alongs I have the cash. I gave it some thought earlier, looks like I'll be picking up some SLP headers. So keeping my stock exhaust manifolds wouldn't be the smartest thing for that kind of HP?

No, getting the SLP headers over any other brand will ensure you squeeze every last bit of HP out of that motor. The stock manifold along with y-pipe are horrible restrictions on our motors, and should be among the first mod to a stock engine. Good luck on getting that much HP. I hope you plan to upgrade your suspension, tranny (T5 will just fall to pieces, 700R4 may hold up a week, but definately get the transgo reprogramming kit for it), I'm not sure if you have auto or stick. Get some SFC or you're frame might not make it.

430 doesn't seem too unfeasable. There's a 400hp 383 shortblock that some ad in CarCraft or HotRod for $1700. Add another $1K for some Dart Iron Eagles and a performance valvetrain, slap on the "stock" TPI (with a performance MAF and bigger injectors and runners) and stab in a more agressive cam and you got it! For under $3500 to boot. That's what I'm planning on in a year. :rockon: Good luck, man! Oh, and yeah, get rid of anything that's stock in the drivetrain or you'll have an expensive hunk of useless scrap iron on your hands...

If you want 430 hp, you better drop the 400+ bones for a better lower intake manifold. The stocker will kill your hp easily as fast as the stock exhaust manifolds. Look at the system like you would air flowing in a 4" pipe, if you neck the pipe down to 2" anywhere along the pipe you will only flow what the 2" section will allow. The engine being an air pump, if you modify one area to realize the full potential of the mod you need to mod other areas. Take a total system approach. 400+ hp is going to dictate that.

You have got to be kidding me?

I thought the TPI chokes up stock 350's in the upper RPM. You really think it's going to flow enough for a horney 383???

Come on man.....if you think he's gonna get ANYWHERE NEAR 400HP with a stock TPI & some injectors & runners......your cracked IMO!!

LOL sorry but honestly some of you guys drive me nuts!!!

let me say it again..............

IF YOU WANNA PLAY YOU GOTTA PAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No if's but's and's or's about it.

You want let alone 400HP at the wheels.....start buying some serious aftermarket FI equipment.

So, uh, Accel Super-Ram's the way to go, huh? Seriously, you can't mod GM's TPI to handle it? I mean with the aforementioned Edelbrock intake, 30 lb/hr injectors, SLP high volume runners, 45% better flowing MAF... I guess a $2K Fuel injection system ain't too bad...

I believe you could see some serious numbers with the Edelbrock intake maybe SLP runners ported plenum a 58mm TB, and 24lb injectors with 50 psi fuel press. Maybe even exceed the 400 hp mark but I didn't see any mention of these hard parts. A stock TPI system was referred to. A Super Ram would be icing on the cake, but hold on to your checkbook. As the previous post said 'If you want to play you got to pay'.

Come on, I put stock in quotes for a reason. I knew you'd hafta modify it to keep up, but it'd at least LOOK stock to any looky-loos. That was my point. A fire-breathin' 383 that looked like a 305 TPI... Thanks for the advice on specifics, tho! Appreciate it.:hail:
