Interesting fact I heard about dual exhausts on a thirdgen...

For awhile now I've been trying to find an exhaust shop that would attempt putting dual exhaust on my TA. None of them would even attempt it and I never could figure out why. I just assumed that it was because putting dual exhaust on a thirdgen can be difficult. I found out today that that just isn't the case. The reason the won't do it is because it's a $25,000 fine if they get caught doing it. EPA regulations won't allow dual exhausts on a car that came factory with single exhaust. D@mn the EPA!!!!

Yeah, it depends on the shops in the area. There is a shop down the road that i have had recommended to me by three different people, so that is where I am going when I get a real system put in. Would the shop still get fined if you already have dual exhaust on the car when you bring it in? I have headers and flex pipe, and want to have "real" pipes put on.

That's a good question. I don't know if they would work on it if you did or not. I would say probably so. I cut my own cat off on my car but I had a shop weld a pipe in where it was at and most shops won't even do that. Luckily I know a shop where his philosophy is "if I didn't take it off and I'm only working on the pipe in front of and behind where it was, then I can't get in trouble for it". He won't do dual exhausts though. I've seen a few thirdgens in the area with dual exhaust but I don't know if they actually had a shop do it or if they did it themselves. If I had a welder and knew how to weld and had a pipe bender, I'd just do it myself.

There are places that will do it.

I don't think it's illegal per say but it's illegal for a shop to put it on a car that didn't come with it from the factory. Some emissions BS. I bet if an inspection shop wanted to be picky enough they could decide to not pass the car if it has dual exhaust and didn't from the factory.

IROCZTWENTYGR8: I know there are some that will do it but they're not supposed too and I can't find any here in Southwest Missouri that will do it.

It is not illegal to install duals as long as you use 2 cats.
It is only illegal if it doesn't pass an emissions test.

It is illegal even with 2 cats. Only cars that had dual exhaust and dual cats as an option can be fit with them. Everything from the cat forward is suppose to be tested by the EPA and approved before installed on a car. The loss of back pressure could possibly change the tune of the motor and cause excessive pollutants.

Myself I think its a load of BS. But thats the way it is.

Also you can do anything you want to your own car. The worst thing that'll happen to you is that someday they might require you to put it back to stock to pass emissions. The shop that installed it though is looking at the $25,000 fine.

I know in our shop we can sell you all the bent pipe you want. Just can't install it! So if you think you can install your own make somekind of template(bent welding rod or something) for the shop to follow. They can also make the ends so they fit together, that way you can clamp it all instead of welding. If you do this, expect to make a few trips back and forth trying to get everything tweeked just right though.

Where I am at, any shop will do anything you want as long as
you let them put 2 cats on it. I used to sell alot of Mustang dual
cat h-pipes to shops installing headers on peoples cars.

If the shop is concerned, take the plate off and trailer the car in, telling them it's off-road only, but you're an environmentally conscious racer and want dual exhaust with dual cats. If you sign an affidavit stating that it's an off-road vehicle only, I don't see why they won't help you. And if they refuse at that point, find another shop!

Solution:

Just put the car on a trailer, take the plates off it, take it to the shop. As long as you tell them it's a race-only car, they can't (shouldn't) deny you. Take your old exhaust off first, it looks less suspicious. That's what I did with mine after they denied doing my exhaust...no questions asked.

You just gotta find the right place even if its not on your area.

Gee it would seem to me it would be even better for emissions if you had a complete dual exhaust with 2 cats. First you have 2 cats to clean up the exhaust not 1, it reduces backpressure which a) reduces gas consumption and b) reduces combustion temps, which in turn help reduce NOx emissions. Too logical i guess for the bureaucrats in washington........................ :lala:

Man, that sounds similar to a lame excuse Ive heard from an exhaust shop that didnt want to do duals on my car. You just have to find the right shop, make it cash only (no receipt), trailer the car with no tags and claim its a race car.

I had luck because of the lack of emissions testing in my county I believe. I know of several people that have had duals done in an emissions controlled area and used the above excuses to justify.

Like mentioned trailer it in. It's my drag (strip only car).
One problem with that is YOU! must first remove the cconverter from the car. By law they cant remove it unless they are replacing it. If its gone and theres no sign of any emmisions equiptment then your GTG.

So follow these steps.
1. Remove the emmision equiptment including any smog check stickers and service stickers from the car.
2. Remove the exhaust from the car.
3. Take tags off and remove all paper work from the car including registration and ins papers.
4. Rent a trailer and haul it to a shop.

Now you can safely claim that its you off road drag car and thier should be no !!!!

So what happens when you run true duals and remove all the A.I.R. crap, no cats or whatever 'cause you don't live in a place with emissions, and then move to a place that has emissions? Can you get a waiver since the car was modified out-of-state, or are you just screwed?

I think in that case you're screwed. Personally, I'm staying here in Missouri the rest of my life. Well, I say that now.

I live in Aurora ... it's about half way between Joplin and Springfield in the Southwest area. You're north of KC right. If you haven't already been there, come on over to www.mofba.net .... it's the Missouri Fbody Association website and I'm a moderator of the marketplace over there. I'm also going to be putting together some get togethers for the Southwest chapter of MOFBA. Probably at least one meeting at Ozark International Raceway in Rogersville and at least one meeting at Mo-Kan Raceway near Asbury. MOFBA is for all generations of camaros and firebirds and we have lots of IL members as well being that the majority of MOFBA members are from St. Louis and the east side of Missouri. They have lots of get togethers at the Gateway Raceway in St. Louis. I plan on going to at least one of those meetings this summer. Hope to see you over on the other board too.
