setup properly the stock 7.5's can handle a decent amount of power. i know people putting over 600hp to them...but they have to be setup with a solid pinion spacer and support cover, good gears, eaton posi unit and 28 spline axles. putting in a 12 bolt or 9" is a great way to put something under the car that will hold serious power but a bolt in unit with brakes and all is gonna be around $3000+

Well, I tore up a rear end (posi disc one) with almost stock 305 TBI. So I don't have much faith in those rears.
Get yourself a nice rear end bro.
I personally would go with the eaton posi if I were you.

As long as you're staying with a 7.5/7.625 ring gear and stock housing consider it a disposable wear item if you're going to drag race the car, the same way as you treat brake pads on a car that is going to be road raced.
There is no problem with the design, it's just too small for hard use in a heavy car...

well...they won't last forever at that power level, but 87 T/A has been 1.38 with consistant 1.4x 60's on a regular basis...i've only been 1.64...when i get into the 1.5x range, i'll have to get on the ball with my 8.5" rearend that i'm fabbing up.

Heh, I’ve officially blown up another set of f-body 10 bolt gears since I last responded to this thread…. That makes 7, 3 posies and an axle or 2, add in a bunch of carnage to the BW one in my formula and the fact that I broke the 8.5” 10bolt in my truck around Christmas (long story, but I’ve got it rigged so I can put it in 2W Lo with a switch on the dash, which gives me basically 4wLo but only putting power to the rear axle).
I’m getting good at this:
