Anyone here coat their own bolts?

Hey, I was wondering what you guys do to coat all of your bolts (if you do so). I've thought about coating them with a thin solution of POR-15. Also have thought about blueing them (like gunsmiths do to guns) but I can't find any information on blueing. Any suggestions?

Of bolts? I could see that happening. But otherwise it's great. I have it coating my two footweels right now (for driver and pass). I struck it with a hammer multiple times and it didn't even chip (until I struck it hard, then it just chipped right where it hit)

Did you look at Eastwood? I think they have a few setups for nickel plating or chrome plating etc.
Along with a shaker to clean up the bolts first.

You might also want to try Caswell Plating. They sell a Black Oxide kit that may be what you're looking for

What did you order. I order a ton of stuff form Techline coatings and From caswell before.

You have to consider hazmat fees are ALOT more then what a product cost.
I ordered a small 8oz Bottle of DLF to coat my bearing and there was a $25 hasmat Fee on top of the $12 shipping fee.

MY BAD!!!!!!!!!!!

I just dug out my receipts, and Caswell was cool. It was something else, from somewhere else, that I order.

Might want to edit your post then, word of mouth can be brutal- especially if it isn't true and someone misses your correction.

Re: Anyone here coat their own bolts?

A Dacromet / polyester coating works well for corrosion protection and to prevent seizing. You can do the actual coating process at room temperature, but the coated parts need to be force ventilated to flash off the solvents, then be baked at about 400ºF to cure and set the coating. Be careful not to exceed the coating cure temperature to avoid the risk of hydrogen embrittlement.

Quite interesting, I shall look into that.

So no one has any information on hot blueing?

Re: Anyone here coat their own bolts?

I don't coat them with por15 or blue them, but I do powdercoat alot of my nuts and bolts plus smaller brackets, until I get a dedicated oven to do bigger items. Seems to do an excellent job holding up to alot.

Plus, home powdercoating systems are cheap now from places like Eastwood, Harbor Frieght, and a few that powdercoating is all they do. I paid less than $200 for mine and it came with 4 different powders to get started with.
