Can I see some pictures of people who altered/eliminated the front strut towers

Can I see some pics of people who have eliminated the front strut towers and fabricated their own. I have a back-halfed drag car, but has the stock front fenderwells and want to lighten it up a bit and make it more accessable to work on the engine with them gone.

Now I know its a structural thing to the unibody, but if your car is caged and you have front hoops in the engine compartment, I am sure that is way stronger than some sheet metal fenderwells.

Any input? I am used to my 2nd gen camaro where there is a frame at least.

Thanks, Nathan

There were pics of a white car in the Fabrication board somewhere a few years back.

Re: Can I see some pictures of people who altered/eliminated the front strut towers

Wow that is awsome! That would make some serious room for forced induction. Will the fender bolt right back on?? Could make a sweet strut tower for that. If you made it a little bigger I would not mind feeding a coil over into it.

Thanks for posting that. Just when I thought I had seen all the mods I could ever make there is a new one :-)

I was just thinking of this car the other day... Does anyone know if it was ever completed? Yeah, I wouldnt be too comfortable getting into any kind of front end collision with it. Wouldnt be my choice for a daily driver, but thats why I have more than one of these!

accident shmaccident. Put in a 1990 air bag setup for cushion effect.

ever see how a lotus esprit turbo is made? Basically same as a golf cart. suspension is bolted to plastic golf cart tub. Hit something and it cracks in half. front of car breaks right off. Been there done that. To fix it, the lotus dealer orders a 1/2 Lotus from Hethel, England, and they cut the car in half, right through the passenger compartment. 2 halves are glued and screwed together!! Wish I still had pictures of this. these other cars show the breakage.

It looks fine as is for drags but it looks like it would need a lot more cross bracing to get the original stiffness back for cornering. Yes? No?

I too would be very interested in seeing more pics of the white car. I started a thread a while back about "Dropping some weight". A lot of people are against removing the wheel wells. Just like npersha, I dont need them in a drag car and they are in the way. 90irocdx3, where did you find those pics and are there more of them? It would be great to see the step by steps, or even detailed pics of the finished front half.

If that front is backed up by a full cage and subframe connectors another 3 tubes, a wonderbar and something that works as a strutbrace it's going to be stiffer then the stock setup, provided the engine comes in the front (which seems to be the case given the K-member)

With just a strut brace it should be about as stiff as stock

After looking at it, I highly doubt if any weight was saved there. But many things were likely gained, rigidity not the least of which.

I think it would be a drop in weight, until I saw the mounting bar (s) for the front clip lol, that looks heavy!

It was all 4130 chrom-moly tubing ( light, strong structural tubing)

I wonder how he mounted the radiator back into that. Guess if he can fab all of that, the radiator shouldn't be a problem lol
