Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Lol so this project Ive been dreading to do for the past 3 yrs is going to cost me. So Im taking you guys along for my journey. To recap, when i first got this car some 5 yrs or so ago.The driver side had a small hole in the footwell..meh. I had swapped in my lq4 from my burnt down t/a into this car the next month into this car and sold the 305 carbed auto. At that point we knew id eventually need to patch it.

Well fast forward to last yr after long surpassing power goals..upgrading the trans..brakes..newer diff swap. The car itself was rotting at a faster pace with the harsh canadian winters and extreme salt being layed down. my first attempt to get a solid time slip resulted in an instant rejection/ban during tech inspection once they saw the hole which I didnt realize how much its grown over time. The seat did have a good gangster lean...and would rock with you through turns LOL

So with that said i bought floors pans from hawks,I bought a cage from them..and bolt/weld in sfcs and i had a driveshaft loop kicking around.Today i finally got the car to the shop and began to gut the interior. With the seats out i plan on getting rid of a few things..mainly the stereo system and clean up alot of the wiring I threw together over time.its a mess for sure.

Now once the carpet and insulation was peeled back...lol I couldnt help but die laughing.Making 700+whp/tq with these weight reduction speed holes isnt safe in the slightest.

Ill be taking more pics and vids as this car gets put together and stiffened up.I want to hit 10s for the first time or just grenade the stock diff attempting to finally launch the car hard.Wish me luck.

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Somehow worse than mine and yet your frame wasn't rotted at the trans mount like mine... Lucky.
My T/A was a Toronto area car up until last year as well... I'm currently doing full floor pans, but had to find a donor section of that frame rail... Hopefully (if my garage doesn't flood this week) I can have the drivers side done by the end of the weekend.

What did you pay to get the floors up to you? I got some old reproduction pans from paradise alley... They had rusted a bit from sitting so long but I paid a decent price for them I think... Some rust removal and epoxy primer and they were good to go... You'll likely finish before I do!

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

I looked at getting pans from paradise alley but they were over charging when i was shopping around. I bought everything from hawks at the sametime and had it shipped all on 1 skid to save on fees.they made me a good deal

My driverside pan is the majority of the problem. Then would be the rear seat rail broke off.But since most of the driver pan is gone already lol..we can repair/replace sections of frame while keeping the car square.the drop the pan in and move onto the passenger side pan which doesnt need a full pan but I wanted to replace both at the sametime, patch a small portion of the firewall for added strength need for the clutch pedal.Slap in the sfc..then the cage. We are hoping to be done in 3 weeks doing this after hours each night.

And ofcourse por15 or something of the like on it all plus add in some extra heat insulation because the damn thing does get hot from the trans tunnel.

More pics later tonight

Yessir...running about 16lbs and a small shot of meth when it dynoed that.I backed it off some to play it safe on the high mileage stock gen 3 rods/pistons lol.

I have a spare lq4 block now so the urge to just send it with 18lbs and more meth is strong.

LOL @ 3:00 into the video, that was weak dude, at least say something next time....

Hopefully you guys know what I'm talking about lol.

Edit: Just watched the rest. The car sounds beast, but just noticed the coolant reservoir where the heater box would be. You're not running a heater...?

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

... heh, I know that look very well. No cutout, but the open downpipe speaks volumes as it is with my neighbors. Fugly lol? Haven't hard that expression used in a long time, you must be from NYC like me lol. Anyways, glad you're running a heater, as it is annoying when you see members pulling the heater box on a street car. I mean unless you live in Florida, that windshield will fog up without one, and is annoying af. Where's the video? Floorpans in already?

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Nah im from toronto actually lol. I was all set to make an update video until my bootleg nero video editing software crashed but im workin on it now. I got the driverside pan mocked into place.

i also sold my 2005 ctsv which i made some profit on. that will help fund some other small things for the t/a i wanted. The passenger side pan will be a breeze since its not nearly as bad. then hopefully this weekend we can start mocking up the cage..get the car up in the air and por15 the bottom and get the sfcs in.mock up where to put the drive shaft loop. but things are starting to move along now.

Video keeps freezing up.

Can see the work being done when you pause it and click on various times though...

Are you using Windows Movie Maker by any chance?

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Video freezes up for me as well.

Try using hitfilm, it was a free program to download, I've only used it once but I already like it way more than my paid for adobe premier 10. Ran way smoother, and it has a youtube ready output format.

Those frame members look rough, I hope you're removing rust and coating them before you close it all up. I was surprised that mine were still perfectly covered in factory paint!
I got my trans frame rail part replaced, nobody will ever know it was replaced so I'm happy with the work... If I get off my butt, the drivers pan will be welded in today, but the rear passenger seat mounting tab is in the way of it just dropping in... But I think if I pull the steering column out I can wiggle it all in place... I really should start up a thread and actually put some content on my youtube channel.

I think you should, be curious to see how it turns out. When I first watched 86White_T/A305's build I was very impressed, nothing really against the LSX engines, am just tired of members saying how great their car is after swapping it in and just leaving it to the imagination of those reading along lol. You'll get that a lot on this website. But yeah man, throw some up on youtube...

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Would love to see more 3rdgen guys post up on youtube. Lsx swapped or not..we dont see enough of these cars in good shape..or get much love in videos so the more guys that put up content would be fun to see the variations of builds. Im not great at making exciting content..and i hate recording myself into a video lol

I was using nero for my video editing needs.and now Im using cyberlink power director. Im still trying to see what the best settings for exporting my vids.i thik the frame rate was set way too high for most pc users to view but it plays perfect on my phone..weird.Im going to reupload using the direct to youtube feature and see if that cures the freezing.

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Back to the subject matter..we have more progress

As you guys noticed..yes the subframe was rough looking but once we cleaned it down it wasnt nearly as bad.It had a hair line crack starting.Stitched it up and then refinished the lip of the subframe also.I wasnt able to snap any pics of it prior but the new pan is in on the driver side.

Its tacked into place but getting to that point was a fair amount of work. The new panels going up the firewall line up perfectly to the factory seam.I wanted to reaplace all of that as far as i could, removing that portion of the rot however was a B*t*h!

After that we measured and cut the pan to fit snug leading right upto the rear bottom seat bracket. We had marked and drilled all the original spot welds and welded the floor to the subframe.Take notice beer hit when I marked the shifter location.the only mistake I made so far

With some good tacks and major frame welds done..I instantly noticed drivers door open and closes like a dream.it had a hair bit or sag and the bottom would scrap along the side skirt as you close it shut.

With that said now we will begin to cut out the passenger side...as this is the much easier side to work on..I expect it to be replaced with the fresh pan in half the time of the driver side.once its tacked into place the car will hit the lift for some under body welds and add a few plates in various spots for strength and tie in points for the cage.

Gotta agree with you there. It's not easy on my part because most of the guys I run with are back in New York City, so it's a one man show in my garage cuz they hate driving down here, and I have hardly any time as it is myself to work on the car other than the last two weeks. House needs attention as well as other things, but the bbq's will get them all down here, and then I'll put them to work lol. But yeah, you guys are doing awesome, and I not only enjoy the vids, but use them for inspiration. So thank you for the effort. Both you and Steve (ZZ3astro) provide great videos and highway pulls, and I'm hoping to be adding to all that no later than March or April if time allows. Tired of giving small and meaningless updates though, I do that to inspire people, and I'm sure it does, but I might just wait til its done and film what I need to afterward at this point. I mean updating that I painted my headlight covers is pointless. What is your name anyway...?

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

ZZ3astro has great tutorial content.he likes to go over detailed information which is cool.I find that I like to do more cut/paste videos instead of showing each step of work i do..or get done. And I do enjoy to go cruising with my car during the spring/summer and record whatever random encounters/races that pop up.

I do plan on making a video once the car is back together on wire tucking and cleaning up the underhood situation I created. My original install was very clean..but over the years of adding my electronics and the turbo build etc..it needs a thorough integration redo.I want to show an indepth video as i pull the entire harness out..and lengthen/shorten everything back into place with new wire loom to pretty up the bay.

then show another video and adding in an android radio, and my oil scavenge pump.Lots more content is coming

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Didnt get too much done tonight. Was my only day off and Im recovering from a cold. But we did get the pass side cut out.And began to clean up the frame and add ing some plate to strengthen it.

While that was being I figured I might aswell work on making the dbl din fit my spare radio pod. Previously i had my very old carputer setup and at the time it was neat to see people drop their jaw that I had a fully operation laptop running in the car.A touchscreen grafted below the climate controls and the computer itself i had mounted in the dash. This dash was abused before I got the car..many crack in the plastic etc..screw holes added for mounting god knows what.So i didnt feel bad for hacking it any further. But now i want to tidy things back up this time around. Its been awhile since i done a stereo install ..and I feel rusty but for a quick 10 mins I got it pretty close to where i want it.The radio wont sound anywhere near as good as the 32band eq and 5.1 processing the carputer had,nor can i run hptuners anymore..but ill have normal radio back..much better bluetooth handsfree capabilities ..apps etc. plus a steering wheel remote control..Which I plan on gutting and grafting into some part of the console probably.

Ill show more in the next video upload.

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Sorry for the delay in updates.Ive been pretty sick the past week, lost my voice and all.Still recovering but trying to get in an hr or 2 here and there per night on the car. Both floors are now in and mostly welded into place.Right now working on the trans tunnel area is the biggest pita to get squared up and tacked in straight. Once thats done it will be time to get the car on the hoist and the cage work can begin.

Pics/vids coming shortly

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Sorry for the late update, things did slow down but now me and my friend Justin are making headway again. From where I left off the main hoop needed some massaging.Fixed that and worked on making the back bars and plates.Things got a little scary welding in the back plates near my hidden meth tank and lines..which ofcourse we totally forgot is full! We boxed in the passenger side plate to add strength in that area due to how that section isnt one piece with the floor back there. Bent up the rear bars and tacked them in.Then before going any further we needed to mock the seats up..especially the drivers seat since the original seat rails were destroyed.Without having a reference..this took a few trails and lots of errors interms of height and position before I was happy and things fit right. With the seats mocked up..the door bars were next.Bolted the seats up,placed the bars and place..closed the door and bam.Problem! Gta door panels,4thgen seats and door bars hit eachother and doesnt touch the base plate anymore. So the pipe bender came out..snaked a bend for the door handle which clears the seat and places the bar back on the plate..great.But that requires putting a support bar leading up to the door bar at the bend.A few more cuts later and we have a completed cage and floor install.I think it looks kinda cool. With all the hard stuff finally done, the next few nights will be getting the car on the hoist and installing the driveshaft loop and weld in the sfcs, por 15 everything.let it cure and then add some insulation and put my interior back together.Im hoping by next weekend the car will be home and I can be ready to start my nightly hunting videos again. In the mean time Im working crazy hours trying to sell as many cars as I can to fund some more projects.I sold a 2017 shelby gt350 and took in a mint 07 z06 trade :O..contemplating buying it myself lol.Justin also got a 69 Firebird shell with alot of new parts ..using spare lq4 block and going twin turbo on it.Going to be a fun 2018!

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

The Z06 LS7 Corvette is fast. 600 RWHP with 135-140 mph trap speed is cookbook recipe with heads, cam, intake, exhaust. Just those upgrades will cost more than your 3rd gen car though.

LS7 engine is a troublesome thing too, and repairs are expensive. If you're going to have one then my suggestion is stay naturally aspirated, or back it up with a bank account that doesn't care if you lose $15K randomly.

Other thing about driving a Corvette is the fun wears off quicker than you might think. The fun never ends when you drive an underdog. The fun can wear off when you drive the trophy car that everybody else is aiming at.

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

I highly doubt id be buying the vette. It would be a fun ride but just out or my range for now..nor would it be a practical car for me.Besides..its slower lol. When a get another fun daily car it will be ls based with luxury thats for sure.Im hooked on the caddy for blending those together.

As for the T/A...well its time to paint.Everything is finish welded, sfcs are in.We pondered about the driveshaft loop I was given long ago and its just not going to work. The brackets would have to be remade and would rather tie it into the sfc.Thats another project for another time.Im not too worried about breaking this new shaft as i am with the 10bolt splattering its guts at the track if the car were to dead hook.

Honestly Im not sure how the car is going to feel no while driving around. Its so solid I know that it will be easier to swing the ***-end around, but for suspension while cruising etc..should be a new car.Im excited to learn the best ways or getting in and out of it having a cage now..how many times ill hit my head or something lol.Going to buy foam padding too.

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Sooo I didnt update much the past week due to my friend getting sick and couldnt work on the car late night during the week.Plus the lovely canadian weather was horrible.

Tonight we got alot of paint done.the undercarriage is painted and rhino lined..which I totally forgot to take pics of before taking the car off the hoist. Painted the cage and floors with 2 coats por15. I almost dont want to put on the rollcage padding once it arrives because the painted cage looks great as is.But from the back of the car ..it really stands out for attention from THE MAN!

I got red and black padding to play with how I want the finished product to be.The car is curing over night so i can finish putting down some insulation. The lay the carpet back down..put the seats in and take her home. From there will be the tedious task of rewiring and putting all the panels back together. Then I need to add my scavenge pump. The week after that my task will be removing the intake and cold side piping to clean out all the oil residue.the track is opening up end of the month depending on weather and the first glimpse of test n tune I want to see how well the car gets down..or if I shatter the diff and get it built asap.

Here are some pics of the progress.

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Why did you make permanent door bars instead of removable? That's like one of the sins of making the car no fun as a driver.

I have a permanent 6 point but the bar is really low next to seat bottom and not in the way at all. The higher, track legal bar is removable and just sits in storage in my house except for rare occasions.

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Im used to it,if I ever do decide to make them swing out,its not hard to do.For now I want to get the car together and send it down the track again without hassle. Its been 2 yrs of not getting a proper slip while being a turbo car. Lol the itch to get out there is strong.

Re: Overdue to tighten things up! Floor pans ..subframes and cage!

Its over due but for the most part.Torched is ready for some track time!
I got minor details to plug away at for the interior trim..relocating some wires etc but the car is home and its like an all new car.

Im trying to get used to the feel.Im not gangster leaning to one side, the car kicks out the rear easily..more than before.I cant wait to throw my nittos on and see how it feels.

If the mother nature isnt a bitch this weekend and the track gets to open up..Ill be heading down on sunday for some test passes.Nothing crazy..soft launches and just feel out the meth at full throttle on low boost and work my way up.

Next is cutting out the openings for the hood vents to be functional,Im redoing my entire pcv setup with bigger lines and dual catchcans.Anyways heres a few clips..and some dyno pulls over the weekend.Be sure to keep an eye out for my track times coming soon.
