VIN decoder

Hi all, after viewing all of the decoders here and trying to determine whether or not my IROC was indeed an IROC or a well-dressed RS I found a great link to that tells you. Why you may ask, well I adopted her and want to know her true heritage! - Anyway I was pleased to find that this link from Carfax provides you the answer for free. It will clearly be listed; as mine returned " Year/Make/Model: 1990 CHEVROLET CAMARO IROC-Z." Needless to say- I was very pleased, and I bid you the best of luck as well. I also ran another VIN I found on this message board and it returned "Year/Make/Model: 1990 CHEVROLET CAMARO RS."

Anyway here's the link:
http://www.dmv.org/used-car-history-report.php?

Hope it's useful,
Töm

Not off hand, I would first recommend going through anything posted by Sticky. It can't be the first time the question has been asked. I see alot of talk about RPO codes, I don't know if it'll help but it's worth a look. Also, I've seen a few members that have access to some sorta GM (I think) database. From what I can tell, if you ask them nicely they may be able to get you quite a bit of info from your VIN code. Hope this helps, -for what it's worth.

Re: VIN decoder

i would like to run my VIN but i cant justify $20 just to figure out what my car really is.

It tells me that its an 87 Trans am with a 5.0L which is exactly what i expected. Even though it doesnt have a 5.0L in it anymore.

Re: VIN decoder

Sometime ago, there was a thread about identifying the GM build
sheet, given a VIN. I'm not clear on the details, but the service
was provided by a young lady (also an F-body enthusiast) that
worked in a GM office where such records were kept. I.E. she did
this gratis for board members. The best I can suggest is start
searching on the tags below. If you can get the build sheet/RPO
codes, there was (is?) an RPO decoder utility downloadable here.
(Build sheets are usually attached to the underside of the console lid,
or somewhere under the carpet, in the back seat ares.)

Good luck

PS
RPO Decoder on selection panel of Home page...

Re: VIN decoder

They reason they all say Camaro Coupe / Z28 / IROC / whatever is because that is all you can tell from the VIN. The only way you can tell what model you have from the VIN alone is if you happen to have a motor what was only available in a certain model, and most VIN decoders aren't smart enough to figure out that.

Re: VIN decoder

You sure you read it correctly? The "1" after the "M" could be an "L". If so, that is a valid VIN:

If that is your VIN you definitely don't have a 91 Formy like you state in your profile.

Re: VIN decoder

compnine is gone now.... the VIN decoders work, but unless it was an L98 or LB9 car it simply was not a IROC or a GTA

My insuirance company lists my B4C as a Z28, based on the engine code int he VIN. I had to prove to them it was not a Z28 but a true special service package car.

Re: VIN decoder

1G2FW21E5JL203842
OK, here goes, I did a vin code search and this is what I have:
year-1988
Trim GTA Hatchback
body-hatchback 2 door
4 seed w/ overdrive
M.S.R.P. $18509
tires 245/50R16
wheelbase 101.00
MY question does this mean this is a GTA? If so it has none of the emblems or items listed here. But by checking when the car was originally bought, it was purchased in Oct.2 1987. I know this because I have the original warranty/owners assistance manual and have talked to the guy that bought it from the factory.

Re: VIN decoder

It does not mean it's a GTA. You cannot tell a TA from a GTA using the VIN alone.

Re: VIN decoder

AmorgetRS is very much correct on this. Aside from Compnine.com, which is limited to Canadian only ThirdGens for that time period, I'm not aware of any other online VIN decoder that actually polls a GM database and retrieves the RPO codes for the supplied VIN.

What you will find is several, generic, VIN decoders that simply break the VIN into sections and decodes them. Because the Trans AM and GTA both share the same VIN prefix of 1G2FW, the generic VIN decoders will return a "Trans AM/GTA". The online decoders don't really look up your specific VIN in GM's database to get specific information from that specific VIN. It's a generic script instead.

That works for me so that saying there were more GTA's built than T/A's according to stats. Crazy but it's here on the site. Again thanks.

Re: VIN decoder

I need to add, the information I posted was from a VIN look up that said it had the Iroc Trim Package. I really do not think it is an IROC because I purchased the vehicle from the second owner with 28k miles on the car and it has RS badging. I did a RPO lookup with the thirdgen.org RPO generator and it doesn't say anything but it has WW4-Appearance Package #4, 1SD-Option Package 04, and it has DX3-Stripe Delete (not sure what stripe its talking about). I was pretty shocked to find it was supposed to have the DE1 option-Rear Window Louvers from the factory. The RPO codes do not have a B4Z package so I do not think its a IROC. I am guessing its just that the ground effects are the same with all the camaro's no matter if its a RS/Z28 or IROC that made that come up with the VIN decoding

The VIN cannot tell you if it's an IROC or not. Since you seem to have the RPOs from your other post, if it has the Z28 RPO it's an IROC, without that it's an RS. The VIN decoder is just making an incorrect assumption.

Re: VIN decoder

yeah that's what I figured, since there was no RPO code on the car saying it was a Z28 or anything I figured it was just the VIN decoder making mistakes as it doesn't know how to differentiate which model the vehicle is by the VIN. I just thought it was strange that others that used the exact same site said theirs told them theirs was a RS. I really didn't think it could have been a IROC as I purchased it from the original owner with 25k miles on the vehicle and they never tried to represent it as an IROC and only ever mentioned it being a RS

Re: VIN decoder

i typed my in my vin (1G1FP21E5JL146754) and it said there were 42 records on my car. does anyone know how i can get a report on my car for free? i looked up the vin and it said 1988 IROC-Z but it doesnt have any badges or codes for the IROC-Z. i would just like to know if its a true IROC-Z or just a special ordered coupe.

Thanks Andy

your report could very well be right and you have an iroc, but then again, you could have an 86 Z28(without the iroc package) and still have the Lb9 motor

do your RPO codes match up to it being an iroc?

No, to get the F code (TPI 305 LB9) motor it would have to be a Formula.

I ordered a vehicle invoice from the gm heritage center.because the door sticker as well as the SPID in the console are illegible. its like a window sticker, like the one that was on the car when delivered to the dealer that bought it.it lists the dealer, all the options the car was built with.everything. so if your SPID is missing ,and you really want to know. $50 gets you all the information you want

That is because PHS covers pre-87 Pontiacs

Re: VIN decoder

I am looking to buy a 1988 Chevy Camaro IROC I know there were two different engine sizes for that year 305 and 350 how can I tell from the vin the engine it has in it. Or how else can I tell the engine size. The seller inherited the car and has no information on it.

Check the 8th digit of the VIN. 8 will be the 350, F will be a 305.

That will at least tell you what the car came with, but may not be what's actually in the car now.
