Factory Performance
anybody posted any threads or put the factory quarter mile times/MPH before for all models?
my 85 IROC has its motor out of it for now and i may be getting a L98 from an 87 so i'd like to know what i can expect out of it.
be a good sticky if we got all of the performance figures for all years and all models(base, berlinetta, RS, Z28, IROC-Z28) and (Base, Formula, Trans Am, GTA, TTA).

the 87 L98 cars IIRC ran somthing in the high 14s factory. other than that I'm not sure. cept the TTA (89 MY, as there was a V8 TTA in the early 80s) it ran slightly faster, 275HP and all.

My 88 IROC with the L98 tottaly stock ran 14.9 @ 89.6 MPH. They were probably faster from the factory but mine has around a 190,000 miles and still running strong.

Re: Factory Performance
A friend from work just bought a 1988 Trans am with the l98 and 700r4 the only difference between mine and his is he has a 3.27 rear end and mine has a 2.77 and his ran 14.4. I think I'm going to get him soon though, I got 3.27 gears and carrier and I'm picking up a lt1 modified intake today.

Re: Factory Performance
14.10 at about 99mph with my 120k mile Formula. Only real mods are cheap cold air intake, air foil, no cats, and Flowmaster catback. I did some of the free mods and removed a little weight too. This sucker pulls pretty hard for what it is! I don't think 13's are oughtta the question with a little more tuning.

My 85 iroc has a 305 TPI from a 88 iroc in it. In the future i plan on putting the 85 TPI back in it. I know the 85 motor has 215 hp over the 88's 195 but will i see any improvement in the quarter mile time or not? If so how much?

Re: Factory Performance
With the 85 motor you will notice a slight loss in low end torque. But on the other hand, You'll notice more over all improvement in the mid/ top range. The 88 motor should be outta breath by about 4,500 while the 85 is capable of higher revs. stock for stock the 85 will outrun the peanut cammed 88 setup by at least a couple 1/10's in the quarter. The 85 motor will also respond better to simple mods like, intake porting, exhaust work, etc. It has a decent sized cam for a 305. It can get some breathing done if You open up a few restriction's.

Re: Factory Performance
Just for clarification, those '88 specs on the LB9 TPI are from an auto tranny equipped Camaro. If only the donor had a 5-spd stick, then she didn't get a peanut cam but a sweeter cam resulting in an LB9 with 220hp & 290trq (both greater than the '85 auto only equipped LB9).

Re: Factory Performance
I went to the track last night just to get some more base lines before the gears nd intake go on. My first run was a 15.088 @ 87.83 2nd 15.084 @ 87.45 3rd 14.97 @ 88.53. Then I took about an hour break to let the car cool down and let the sun set and my final run was a 14.78 @ 91.64. All these times are from a stock L98 car. I was impressed but a friend I went with has a stock SRT-4 and was running 14.1 all night

Re: Factory Performance
Bone stock 85 IROC here and it will run 15.20's all day long. With something as simple as a gear change an 85 305 TPI IROC will run with if not a little better than a stock 350 IROC from later years. I run drag radials all the time otherwise I just blow the rear tires off mine on the street.

It's still in need of a proper tune up as well as some timing adjustments. I may be able to shave another tenth off my time as my best 60' was 2.177, my best 1000' was 12.933 and on my fastest run I manually shifted at 5,000 RPM instead of 4,500 RPM.
