Did I make a mistake scrapping this car?
Did I make a mistake scrapping this car?
It was an 87 GTA hard top. TPI350, 700 auto, aluminum drive shaft, 3,27 posi with discs. huge sway bars. car was black with a grey interior. My dad bought it at an abandoned vehicle auction in philly about 8 years ago. The car had 33000 miles. the body was trashed and the origional rims were MIA.

I would have to say ...yes. Was it not repairable??? The drive train alone would have been worth at least $1000us. Why did you get it, if you didn't want it.
I meant scrapped as in took the parts I wanted and crushed the rest. I was just wondering if the car had any value for being rare or whatever. This was 2 years ago. trust me, not much went to waste.

Oh...I see well if the body was shot then...no. I must say I don't recall any 87 coming with the TPI, I may be wrong but I thought the TPI didn't start till 88. If you got all the good stuff then your all right. Not to many of these cars are considered RARE. So it sounds like you did the right thing. Remove all the good stuff and trash the rest.

I beleive TPI for thirdgens started in 87. TPI for Vettes started in 85. I'm no expert though. This is just what I've read.

Ok, so I was semi right then. ^_^
Cruzin, I bought it that way. I paid $1,000 for the car as it is. Was originally thought to be a blown head gasket. So I bought it and started tearing into it. Had the gasket set all ready. Then the driver side head came off and
. Wasn't a blown head gasket!
I just ordered the engine this monday for it. Though I have to change my sig as I decided not to get the LT1 cam. I'll stick with the stock cam until I really start getting into the engine. I might do minor things though. I really want a Holley stealth ram, or a LT1 intake for it.
Its a sound body, and the interior needs to be put back together. Obviously the engine is gone. The tranny is still good too, otherwise its in great shape. No rust on the body, and no underbody rust to be found.

Its costing me $1,675 for the engine. Its a reman with a 7 year/ 70,000 warrenty. Pretty decent too. Which is why I went with it. The company has been around for 30 years so the must be doing something right. They won't do a core exchange because the block is cracked, but I wonder how much is salvagable out of that engine. The heads are still good, need to be worked over again though. The lifters might still be good. Rods are good but should be tested.
The way i figure it, the engine overheated and the pressure from the boiling water cracked the water jacket. I have some other misclanious issues to deal with though. No radio, power antenna was removed and replaced with a standard antenna. Basically its real fixer upper. The most important bit is there though. A good solid, rust free body.
I wish I could install the engine myself. I nether have the equipment, nor the time to do it. I will have it at ThirdGen nationals this year though. Ought to give me time to break the engine in. I figure a 700 mile trip ought to finish off the break in period.

Sounds like your on the right track. That price for the eng. is good too. Good luck. And let us know how it turns out.
87 GTA loaded not rare
To see how rare this car is you just need to check out how many where built.
9,481 where built in US, the standard load for those was every performance option avail (L98 TPI, Alum Drive shaft, G92 3.27, etc.) Of those probably 2500-3000 where 305 T5 combo.
So I would guess no the car wasn't rare.

87 GTA
Sounds like the one that was stolen out of my driveway about 8 years ago. Mine had the darker gray or charcoal interior. I miss that car. Here is a question. How many LS-6 70 Chevelle SS were made. Somewhere around 9000 cars. Look at a 69 L-78 396/375hp SS Chevelle there were around 9000 of them made also. So I would say that 9000 copies of a certain kind of car could be rare. I think sooner or later the 3rd Gen F-bodies will get more recognition. It just seems funny when you say that about 9000 GTA's made that year makes the car not rare really but a lot of people consider the Chevelles rare.
The morning I went out to go to work and I seen the car was not in the driveway I was ready to kill someone. Once I look back at it I am glad I did not find this person right away. I just wish to put them behind bars for a long time so the person can think about it for a while.
The car was an 87 GTA with the L-98 350, Rebuilt 700r4, 3.70 SLP ring and pinion, gold laced wheels, msd-6al. When we ran the car at Kil-Kare dragway in Dayton, Ohio it was hitting 13.65 off the spray. On the spray we were hitting 12.50's. Oh well I have my 83 now and it has it's good points as well.
