1990 Z28 Question...

From my understanding the 1990 model year the IROC ceased production on DEC 31, 1989, and Dodge got the "IROC" NAME.

My question is this. WHAT does a 1990 Z28 look like, did they make them... Or did they automatically come up with the 1991/92 Body style. What wheels did it have? is there any good original pix someone has.

i thought they had a iroc in 90? theres a few people on here that have 90 irocs, theres one guy that has 3 if im correct, which would mean that in 90 they had the RS and IROC, then 91-92 they had RS and Z-28 which the z-28 used the 16" rims, if im wrong about the 90 iroc thing someone correct me

You are correct, they had the 1990 IROC for sure, but GM could only use the IROC name until DEC 31, 1989. Did they make a 1990 Z28, or not is my question.

The 91 production year was moved up because GM didn't have the IROC name. IE 90 is a short production year.

John,

Don't confuse a model (calendar) year run with a production year run. Here's an example:

The 1987 Camaro (model year) had a production year run beginning around August, 1986 thru July, 1987. Knowing this, let's look at the 1990 Camaro. Production began around August, 1989. When Chevrolet lost the IROC contract, they were no longer legally able to use the name, IROC-Z, for the 1991 calendar year. Therefore, production of the IROC-Z (and RS) halted in December, 1989. Normally, production would have continued at least through the first half of 1990, but because they could not, the 1991 Camaro was introduced in April, 1990, to cover some of the gap. So the 1991 Camaro was produced from 4/90 to 7/91, a very long production year run.

A little bit of trivia that comes out of all this>> There were ZERO 1990 Camaros built in 1990!! They were all built in 1989.

THAT is exactly what I was wondering. I knew that 1990 Vehicles did not start on Jan 1 1990, I was just confused... I think the 1991 Firebird production was early as well, like in March. I did not realize that there was no 1990 Camaros made in 1990. Thanks, that actually eliminates me drawing one car.

A few months ago I saw what I thought was a 91-92 (Aero nose) GTA for sale, but looking under the hood the emission decal said '90. So would it be correct to assume that Camaro and Firebird started very early for 91? Did some late production run '90 Firebirds get the 91-92 Aero pkg? I'm wondering...
