I just picked up a very early 90 Formula build date of 8-89 ans vin 200281. Oddly enough it has the third brake light in the spoiler, not in the upper hatch like i thought they should. was this done for 90 Formulas only or was GM just using up the old spoilers ? any info on this?

 

91-92 had the third brake light in the hatch, and 86 had its one year on the hatch light too. in 90 it was in the spoiler

I thought that the third brake light was on top of the hatch in 1985-86. Then they moved it to the spoiler in 1987. Didn't they?

 

interesting! thanks for clearing that up. I thought 90's had it up top on the inside. guess not!

87ws6 - 85 had no 3rd brake light. 86 had it on the top outside. and 87-90 was in the spoiler and 91-2 was mounted on the top on interior side.

1985's did not have a third brake light.

1986 was the only year that the light was on the top of the hatch.

91/92 had it inside the top of the hatch glass.

Before 86, there wasn't a law requiring a third light. For 86 the light was just added to the top of the hatch on the outside. In 87, every fbody with a spoiler got the light in the spoiler. 87's without the spoiler got the 86 style light. Since by 87 most thirdgens had a spoiler, not many 87's with the 86 style light are around. But they do exist. 88-90 had the same light in the spoiler as 87. 91-92 have the light inside the hatch at the top, except for convertibles which still had the light in the spoiler.
