Rear View Mirror Options

Alright, first and most important question. Is the autodimming rear view mirror the exact same for the Camaro and Firebird, right down to the color of the lettering?

Second: What mirror options were available and on what years? Here's what I know.

Standard mirror - 82-92
Dual map light mirror - 8?-??
Auto dimming mirror - 87?

I've seen or heard somewhere that some of the GTA's had a rear view mirror that was remotely controlled????

Really don't know if the auto diming is different between a Camaro and a Firebird. My guess is, it is the same.

The auto dim mirror was only available in 86-87 in Camaro, probably the same for Firebird. I have yet to see one that works. But some of the low mileage cars on this board may still work.

Scott?

The dual map light mirror option was available from 89-92

My 86 TA has one. I also picked up a spare. Both work. My car has 156,000 miles on it, so... I dunno about mileage being any problem.

Ya, mileage probably isn't an issue. Maybe just luck. They seem to be pretty unreliable though.

Mine did not work when I got it with 6300 miles.

2 years ago at the Camaro SuperFest, somebody gave me one from an 88. The shape is slightly different and it to didn't work.
I took the motor from that one and soldered it onto my board and now mine works.

The age is probably more a factor than the mileage. They were not very reliable then and are not very quiet either. Mine is turned off right now due to the whining noise of the motor when it activates. It startles you if the tunes aren't loud enough to override it.

Also, I believe they were available beyond 87. I think the replacement I got was from an 88. It could've been from an 86, but I thought it was newer, not older.

My invoice for my 87GTA has this for the mirror,
DD8 Mirror-rearview automatic tilt

Is this what you mean by "auto dim"?

Plus, I don't know if mine works right now(no engine yet).

Laters,
Conrad

If you have battery power to the car, you can test the mirror easily. block the sensor on the windshield side of the mirror and move a flashlight across the sensor on the face of the mirror. It will take a second or two for it to activate, but you'll hear it if it works.

Pretty sure the lettering is white. I'll take a pic of it later.

Scott,

The Camaro White Book shows it available in 86 and 87. only

So I,m pretty sure it was discontinued after 87

I personally went with an auto dimming mirror from a 90 Riviera, its shape is almost identical to the standard "non-autodimming" mirror, but the cool thing is its silent . It uses Liquid Crystal to darken. Besides no one ever notices it... not like my car is stock.

Green wire - Backup lights
Black wire - Ground
I think it was red - switched power

You're right. I just did some additional checking and couldn't find the mirror on the 88's or 89s. The other mirrors that I got must've been 86 then.

I got one of those on my 86 IROC Z, but never checked to see if it worked. I dont drive the 86 IROC Z any more either so I have to see if it works.
