I helped a guy earlier this evening order an '01 T/A WS6 convertible, black on black. For the super-low-price of $37,500, you can have one too!!

And GM wonders why they don't sell more of these things....

That wasn't a ripoff guys. Well, I wouldn't pay that, but that is MSRP on a '01 WS6 T/A convertible.

I highly doubt you guys are getting T/A WS6 convertibles for anywhere near 27k. Remember, a convertible adds about $5,000 to the price.

My friend just bought an '00 T/A t-top for $29,600. So yeah, you can get them a lot cheaper than $37,500 around here, but they ain't fully loaded WS6 convertibles either.

But hey, if you DO find one for that price, lemme know...I WANT IT

supposedly they will make the f-bodys until 2002 (35 year anniversary i think). many dealers told me that the vette will become chevy's only rear-wheel drive car and maybe pontiac will bring the firebird back in a few more years. I know that when i can order the 2002's, i am going to get a firehawk. Maybe they will have some special edition or anniversary one. they are bad as hell...check them out at www.slpeng.com .

Here's a set of guidlines when reading/discussing the f-body demise rumors:

1. Dealers don't know sh*t.
2. Dealers think they know it all.
3. Statements that start with "Bill's cousin's neighbor's sister slept with a guy that is a Janitor in the Detroit offices..." can be immediately disgregarded.
4. Camaroz28.com has a 5th gen discussion area with a person known as "Red Planet". he works at GM and seems to be the best source of information right now.
5. Dave Hamburger and others at SLP are also a very good source of information.
6. Both of the above individuals would have very good reasons for not giving concrete answers.
7. Beginning between '03-'06, it is likely that RWD will begin to gain tremendous popularity in the midsize and full size vehicle markets, provided we're not all driving electric cars by then. This is important because if we have a handfull of RWD platforms already available, tooling costs for low quantity production vehicles (i.e. f-body) will be substantially reduced.
8. Nobody will have an official, factual answer until the beginning of the 2003 model year and all comments before then are purely speculative.

Jim's got it right. Where I work, we don't pretend to know whats going to happen to the Fbody, but I realize other dealers do. I've talked to several since the beginning of the rumor in '98, and everyone I talked to swore up and down they'd never kill it. They don't know sh*t. They don't know any more than we do, and there have been no memos handed to me on a GM letterhead that says ANYTHING about the future.

I do believe from what I have seen and read that there will be a 5th gen Camaro due in about '04. As for a Pontiac derivative, that seems to be more up in the air. Believe me, dealers WANT one, but that doesn't mean we'll actually GET one. Cars like that Opel roadster that I talked about are proof that Pontiac and GM are considering other ideas.

Jim is right as well about plans for more RWD platforms in the coming model years. That gives extra incentive for GM to continue a Camaro/Firebird.

I have faith though that GM will not let this market bow to Ford. There's too much at stake. The traditional Fcar buyers may not be as thrilled with the new Camaro (whenever it does come back), as I firmly believe it will be a little watered down from the original 2+2 idea. But there will be something, and it will be a good car.

It probably won't be enough though to keep me from sinking $15,000 into an IROC restoration though

I agree totally...thats why I say I wouldn't buy one.

And people are trying to tell me price isn't whats keeping these things from selling at least a little bit better!!

A new Vette will run you about $45k. You can get a stripped Z28 for $22k. That's under HALF the price of a vette. Even totally loaded, a new SS won't run you over $32k unless you bought it from Honest Abe's Honest Car Lot.

Jim,

I'm not aruging with the fact that you can order a V8 for an OK price. But I'll tell ya what...go try to find one. I haven't seen a Z28 under 25g's in over a year.

What I was saying is, if you're gonna spend 37k on a T/A convertible, why not spend the same on a new Corvette hardtop for the same price?? Not all new 'Vettes are 45k. Hardtops start at the same 37k.

When I'm saying a lower price is what will sell more, this is what I mean. Give me an RS Camaro or Formula with a destroked, 250-260hp LS1 for $19-20k with PW and PL (NOT STRIPPED), and I can find you WAY more buyers. In that price range, all there is is 1-2 year old ones, and NO ONE wants to buy one because who knows who beat on it for the 1st year????

The problem is, there is NO middle ground anymore! There is no $400 V8 option on a base coupe. That's what they need! If they would offer a V8 under $20k with a few goodies, the damn things would sell.

Don't believe me? As I said, go through production records for 3rd gens. What sold more, IROCs or RS V8s? There's the answer...an inexpensive V8 would work.

Oh yeah, one more thing would help me...make a 3.8 that has the nice little exhaust burble of the old 2.8s, and give me a 'Bird that isn't so damn gaudy!! (aka ugly T/A spoiler and front end)
