Help on figuring out what my car is?????

I picked up an 84 iroc a while back. I'm the second owner, but the guy who owned it before me did a lot to it and I don't know what options it had or anything. If anyone can help me out in finding out whats on my car, I'd be thankful. Here's what I know:

It has z28 badging on the outside, but a IROC-z28 badge on the inside
All power options, including windows, locks, driver seat, mirrors, rear hatch latch, and defrost
T-tops
A/C, cruise, tilt, fins on hood
Apperently it had a v6 stock, with an auto, now it has a v8 and a turbo 400 three speed out of an old chevy truck (that's my guess)
Z28 mags (don't remember size right off hand)
Black with gold stripe around ground effects

If anyone can help me, it would be helpful

84 Iroc???? I thought they were introduced in 85. Thats my understanding,my guess is the previous owner seriously modified this car from a regular and just got an IROC interior.

Yeah, I think IROC's were only from 1985-1990....

If it had a V6 originally, it's not even a Z28.

84IROCz28,

Oh boy....... I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think it's important that you know the truth. There are two major issues I need to clarify:

1) The IROC-Z was introduced in 1985. It sounds like the original owner replaced the dash emblem.

2) No Z28/IROC-Z came with a V6. What is your VIN? This will tell us conclusively.

If your car originally came with a V6, what you own is a base Sport Coupe that was sold to you as an IROC-Z... Let's try to verify this. Please post your VIN.

Also, do you have a pic of the car?

Chevy didn't acquire the International Race Of Champions series sponsorship until 1985. Therefore there is no such thing as a 84 IROC, period. It doesn't matter what motor, or anything else, it doesn't exist. Some other one of the car companies (Porsche? I don't recall) had the rights to use the IROC name before that year. In 91 Dodge got the sponsorship, and right now Pontiac has it. They run Firebirds in the races.

84 Z28s came with one of 3 motor choices, all V8s: the LG4 std 4-barrel, the LU5 "Cross Fire" dual TBI, or the "HO" L69. It was not possible to get a 6-cylinder in a Z28.

Post the first 10 digits of your VIN, like Willie said it's easy to decode it and tell exactly what kind of car it is and what engine it had. It sounds to me like you have a base model Sport Coupe that somebody stuck a bunch of emblems from the better cars onto.

Don't be too disappointed. According to your VIN you have a 1984 Z28 with the L69. That basically translates to a 84Z28 with the highest output engine offered.

All an 85 Iroc would have on you is 16" wheels, some minor bracing, heavier sway bars, foglights, and badging... TPI too, but the LB9 and L69 are pretty closely matched on the street anyway.

Made in: United States
Manufacturer: General Motors
Make: Chevrolet
Restraint System: Manual belts
Carline Series: Sport Coupe, Z28
Body Type: 2 door coupe
Engine Code: 305 ci V8 L69 (1984)
2 is the CHECK DIGIT.
Model Year: 1984
Assembly Plant: Van Nuys
Production Sequence: 11356

Just to clarify this bit of Camaro history.

Camaros were used in the IROC series from 1972 through 1990; Porsche Carrara RSRs were used only for the first year of the series in '71. (They proved to difficult to tune "identically" and were dropped after one season)Even though the Camaro had been used since '72, it wasn't until '85 that Chevy obtained the rights to use the IROC name. (Much the same way Pontiac acquired the rights to use the Trans Am name in the late 60's) It was Chevy's decision to pull it's cars out of the IROC race in '90 stating that "time spent beating other Chevies on the track was time spent not beating Fords and Mopars". Then in '91 Dodge stepped in for a couple years with the Daytona. (Dodge even marketed an IROC Daytona for one year) Then of course Pontiac has been the car of choice since then.

The first IROC Camaros used were model year 1974s.

Big aluminum bumpers, sloping headlight covers, and the small back window.

Well 1974 was the first year that the Camaro was used in the IROC race. But it was not offered in any form to the public. Not until 1985 was it offered to the public.

Like I said, the International Race Of Champions (IROC) series originally used model year 1974 Camaros. They were Camaros in appearance only. Full framed race cars very similar to Winston Cup cars of the day. If I remember correctly, I think the engines were built by TRACO (Michigan?).

Interestingly, the phrase "Not offered to the public until 1985" is not totally correct.

I'm an old stock car racer and sometime in the late '70s, the original RACE IROCS were advertised for sale (to the public), as well-used race cars, in National Speed Sports (a race info paper) and I believe a few other auto industry related publications.

By this time, they had been changed to the later model bodies.

This is being picky, but they WERE IROC Camaros (although race cars that were not street legal) and they WERE offered for sale to whoever wanted them!

Like you said, the first Chevrolet FACTORY IROC Camaros, offered to the public, were model year 1985s.

My bad, I was off by a few years there. The Camaros made their debut in the '75 season and ran through the end of the '89 season. Dodge took over in '90.

As far as the cars being Camaros "in appearance only" That's all any of the cars have ever been. (With the possible exception of the Carrera RSRs) In fact, the first year for the Daytonas they used the same chassis as the Camaros and simply stretched a new skin over it.
