These options are fairly common on early thirdgens. Both my T/A's have/had them.

The carpeting on the sides is called the Deluxe Luggage Compartment Trim (RPO B48). It was an $84 option. The folding lid is called the Locking Rear Storage Cover (RPO D27) and it cost $80.

On some years (and models), the Deluxe Luggage Compartment Trim included the Locking Rear Storage Cover and its cost was $164.

I like the carpeted panels too. My friend's 86 TA has it, but neither my IROC or GTA have it yet. When I get everything else on my very long list done, I'll carpet the panels. I'm considering using an alternative color, which I think could look real good.

I'll step in on the other side, I prefer the bare plastic to the carpeted panels. The carpet just doens't look natural, and it doesn't seem to wear as well. Over time it fades and when it comes loose from the plastic it looks like *** . Maybe its just that I'm used to seeing the cars without the carpeting so the carpet looks wrong. Either way, the carpet is sold precut by a couple of the aftermarket companies. I wanna say its available from Classic Industries, and maybe Nextgen.

I have seen those options as well....

On the opinion side, I am with Drew.
I like the hard, sleek look of the plastic.... Carpet is for softies!!! Not for musclecars... (for lack of a better way to describe the idea)

Out here in the desert southwest, plastic panels literally disintegrate and turns to a chalk like substance over years of sun rot. I definitely prefer carpet over faded and sun rotted plastic.

II have both carpeted (88 Iroc-Z) and non (90 RS 'vert). I prefer the non-carpeted. No problem with being attacked by UV on a 'vert. 8^) Lon

I personally liked the locking storage cover in the back better than the carpet on the sides.

My electric hatch on my 89 RS has passed 200,000 miles, no problems. Of course I behead anyone who slams the trunk. Plus my convt trunk lid probably weights 1/3 of a stock glass hatch.

BTW the compartment door was an option itself apart from the carpeted panels, and could be had with or without Ttops. The well in the back of our cars is for storing a flat tire. Check any 82-92 Fbody owners manual and it'll confirm this.

I haven't seen a mid-late Camaro yet that didn't have the carpeted console. The mid-late Z28's and such all seem to have the carpeted kickpanels, which is a really good idea since they scuff and scratch so easily. The carpeted panels in the rear were gone by at latest 89.

Actually I got to thinking, and the only camaros that didn't get the carpeted kick panels are cars that don't have the delux interior. Also I'm not sure about the console, I know my RS has the carpeted console, but it has the custom interior. I can't recall if the RS's I've seen in the junkyard had carpeted consoles or not, I want to say the cars with the base interior didn't. So I guess the carpeting on those panels would be part of the delux or custom interior, and the hatch panel carpeting was an additional option. As far as I can remember I dont' think I've seen a car with rear shoulder belts and carpeted cargo area panels.

Couldn't have said it better myself.. I'm in NC but I've seen way too many brittle plastic trim pieces falling apart in my hands, etc. .. the carpet prevents that, plus it looks a lot better. Check out the condition of this non-carpeted Texas car:

the trunk sides look all brittle and white, but it's supposed to be "dark charcoal" .. doh

I know this is an old subject, but a friend of mine had a 91 RS V6 that had the cheap interior and the console was uncarpeted. I personally prefer the carpet.

Any thirdgen that isn't cared for is going to look like garbage. GM stopped carpeting all the panels in the mid 80's. On the later cars it wasn't optional and wouldn't be correct. Not to mention its just dead weight.
