I have an 86 z28 and its gunmetal grey with dark grey gfx. i have only seen one like it before and it was on this forum and he had never seen another either. im wondering if it was a rare option. also, would this have come stock with a louvered grille or a "camaro" grille. the car was in a front end accident and a louvered grille was put in, and im not sure which was stock but i wanna make it appear as original as possible...a couple pics.

i think the seats were replaced pretty recently too.

Nice ride! Good job.
Zs usually had either gold or silver GFX. I know that grey color was available for 88 up. I can't say for sure if that combo was factory or not-- looks great though.
If it has fogs it should have the CAMARO grille. it it doesn't, then the louvered.

Rare? Probably. Most were silver or gold. It's unfortunate that Chevrolet didn't keep production numbers for accent trim (to list only one).
The charcoal rockers/wheels were available from 1985-87. The primary body color on these Z28s were white, silver (85 only), and charcoal. I bought an '86 Z28 new that was white with charcoal rockers!
....also, would this have come stock with a louvered grille or a "camaro" grille.
Depends. In 1986, the fog lamps was a $60 option on the Z28. If you have this option (RPO T96), it came with the "CAMARO" grill.

Yep. They are not the original fabric or pattern.

wow thanks a bunch for the info. definantly dont have the foglight option. i think i might go back to the louvered grille for stock purposes, although the wheels arent stock either. are you saying my wheels would have been charcoal as well?

Yes. I reluctantly post this pic of my '86 the day after I bought it in 1986. The upper body pinstriping was dealer installed. Otherwise, it is all original. Gotta love my short shorts! Groovy man!

Only year to get an IROC in that color but not the only year for Z/28's, RS's or Belinettas.

ok, maybe this is a dumb question, but why are there rare colored cars ever? I understand if they were thought to be ugly (brown) or just too bright (neon pink) they would limit production, but most of the time these "rare" colors are neither. so why would GM or any company only make a few these rather tame colors? seems like the cost to convert back and forth from those colors (especially back in the day) on the paint sprayers would be too much to not make a lot of them. if that makes sense to everyone.

Well you are exactly correct. GM did not intentionally make these colors rare. The fact that they did not sell is what makes them rare. In 1988 for example, grey was not very popular among guys ordering IROC's. Peoples tastes come and go and today, a grey IROC looks damn hot! That is why every 2nd 3rd gen is either red, blue, black or white. Those colors sold well and so GM just kept those colors available.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but were there alot of black and gold 86 z28's made? I've only seen 1 other in this color combo (and everyone thinks its me driving around!)

Here is another angle, I have an '82 Exterior Colors brochure they gave away and an '82 Dealer only Exterior Colors card sample pack you could look at but not take home.
Looking at both I would not have even thought of ordering a bird in "Light Jadestone Metallic".
The samples do no justice to the actual colors of my S/E, by colors I mean it's Silver Metallic during the day and a very kool light Blue after the sun goes down.
I have only seen 1 other '82 S/E the same color as mine, so welcome to the "Rare colored 3rd Gen Club"

My first car was a two tone gunmetal/charcoal 86 camaro SC. It was just my highschool turd but my senior year I picked up an Golden yellow 87 L98 IROC. Im surprised there werent more yellow IROCs made (3052 built in 87) sence the 80s were all about loud flashy colors.

I had a 2nd Gen T/A in charcoal silver. It's a good looking color on just about any vehicle. My '83 is beige(code 59) with gold GFX/wheels.They only offered beige in '83-'84 with about 20K Camaros total for the 2 years(I don't know if it was offered on Firebirds).GM assigns vehicles certain colors, maintains the very popular colors in multiple model years and expands the color choices if the vehicle line is popular.
