I was recently inquiring about NOS Firebird center consoles. I was informed that there was a very rare black version available from the factory only. Can anyone tell me what model Firebirds this black console came in?

all others from 1985-1992 were Charcoal gray.

Yeah, those are not really that rare, I have seen a bunch in the bone yard. They are pretty much the same as the Camaro center consoles.

He may be referring to the 85+ consoles that someone is selling on ebay that have been dyed black. I have seen those on there alot.

I imageane thats possibly what he is referring to, never seen one, I would bet its not factory, but you never know. I highly doubt it tho.

I'm the one who sells the black ones on eBay. (I've attached a picture of one in black.) Whenever I used to sell to factory gray ones I used to have tons of people asking if it was gray or black. I always had to explain they never made black ones. That's why I figured there would probably be a good demand for black ones. Of course, there's still some people would will argue that they made black ones.

the 82 z28 one is black but with carpet on it, light gray carpet

the 84 z28 i had was black, and so was the 83 z28, an 82 s/e i parted, an 85 t/a i parted, and so on,. all were/are black console equipped

All '85+ consoles were grey with the black shifter plate. There were no black vinyl consoles after '84

There is an 82 FB here in the JY with the white,cream interior and the center console is the same white color, only one I have seen that was somewhat different.

It's not factory then. All Firebirds/TA/GTA have grey center consoles from 85 and up. There was not a black console from the factory.

Exactly, all '85-'92 center consoles and radio pods are gray.

The Camaro carpeted ones are part of the custom cloth interior.

I believe that my 83 5-speed console is pretty rare in my T/A. You never see one in a bone yard. If you do it is trashed or broken somewhere. The top plate anyways is hard to find. The bottom part might be the same though.

may be not sene often but no one wants them regardless, i wasted a perfect console and plate and all in the 84 s/e, it was a 5 speed car, the interior was totally immaculate a brand new one would have been no cleaner, went to junk complete, i still have brand new condition seats out of it no one wants, its crazy sometimes..

Black spray paint is $.96/can at Walmart...

The Firebird had an available option for a two tone interior. In some cases parts of the dash that were normally black were offered in colors (red, blue, tan, etc). Look at S/E Firebirds. Even so, the consoles from 85-up were never offered in any other color then charcoal gray.

Now I took a pic today but after reading about charcoal grey I am wondering if the colors are close. The console looks black but may as well be charcoal grey.

85-up all used gray originally, but anyone can buy a can of black spray paint and change one over... For that matter you could paint one hunter flourescent orange and it wouldn't make it original.

To add to Drew's statement, the two tone dash was offered through 1987, it was NA on the Trans AM & presumably the GTA as I have never seen one on a GTA. From what I have seen the two tone dash was standard on the Formula and Firebird in 1987 when you ordered any color other than Black. Then again I have never seen a Red intiror from 87 either but they are out there.

The Center console was always Charcoal from 85 +.

If I remember John, the red interior that came in the '87 GTAs had the black and grey dash, just the seats, carpet, doorpanels and rest of the interior pieces were red.
