Re: Vin Locations.
every body panel will have a small decal that usually says RDOT and they also have the vin number one themthey are usually on the inside of theverybody panel. except the doors they are on the back side of the jamb. also the drivers door will have a large decal by the latch that will have the vin on it. hope this helps

Re: Vin Locations.
also if you remove the rear interior panels you will have a few more stickers with the vin.
Re: Vin Locations.
i'm pretty sure all of them got the stickers, all new cars get them. if they're not there then the parts were changed. this is how they started cracking down on stolen parts and whatnot. this is a good way to tell if the car had been in an accident or painted. i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure all cars started getting the rdot stickers from a certain year to present

And that certain year for thirdgens was 87. Im pretty sure the vin is stamped on the car in places. Not sure where, maybe someone can elaborate on this.

Re: Vin Locations.
On 1st and 2nd-gens GM stamped a hidden partial VIN(same as the one on the drivetrain) behind the heater box on the firewall. I have never had the heater box off on a 3rd-gen to confirm but I would think that they would have kept up the practice of physicially stamping the VIN number somewhere hidden on the body shell.

I am pretty sure the body panels on my 83 T/A don't have those little stickers on the inside of the fenders. An 87 or newer probably does.

Re: Vin Locations.
Not sure where to look on the '86 and earlier cars, but the vin must be stamped somewhere. One of my 86's is from california and was stolen at some point in time. The vin tag behind the front windshield had been pulled off, as well as the RPO code sheet, emissions stickers and anything else that could identify the car. The car now has a CHP -issued vin tag in the door jamb, so the police must have found something to positively identify the car.

On my 85 Iroc, i took out the heater box today, and behind it stamped on the firewall was the end of the VIN #.

Re: Vin Locations.
ok irock has no idea what he is talking about
the early f bodies did not get the stickers ok
it wasnt until way later in the 80s that the vin stickers started being used
certain users who dont know what they are talking about seriously should refrain from screwing with ppls minds by subjecting them to false info..
the vin will be on the vin plate, door sticker, build sheet, and title all years
and 84 up also on the rpo sticker
the vin code can be made from the digits on the body tag code on the rad support, a few members here are skilled/have the ability to do this

Re: Vin Locations.
Stickers on the body panels began in 1987, so your car should've received them. There should be 9: 1) on the underside of the hood; 2) on top of the front steel bumper support bar(nearer the passenger side); 3 & 4) on the inner side of the sheet metal of each front fender, near the car's front(behind the battery and horns); 5) on the passenger door jamb; 6 & 7) on the inner side of the sheet metal of each quarter panel, near the car's rear(behind the storage box area and spare tire area); 8) on the underside of the rear hatch, near the back edge(hidden by the plastic interior trim panel), and 9) on the bottom of the rear steel bumper support bar(nearer the passenger side, hidden by the bumper cover, but the edge should be visible).
None of the labels are easy to find or see, except the ones on the underside of the hood and passenger door jamb. To see the others, you'll have to search very carefully, prolly moving things out of the way. They're about 1/2" high and 2 or so inches long.
The driver's door jamb didn't get one. In that location, the VIN is on the standard label.

Re: Vin Locations.
Randy82WS7, I don't think the attitude is necessary here. It has already been determined that the information was inaccurate. We have that covered, thanks!
As for the sticker locations, not sure if GM changed where they were on later years, but my 87 has most of them easily readable. The passenger door is readable, the underside of the rear hatch is in plain site between the spoiler mount access covers, the 2 front fender ones are visible by looking thru the openings, and under the hood is easily seen. Did they decide to hide them more on 88+.

Re: Vin Locations.
I had to have a special inspection done when I bought my 85 IROC from out of state, they had me take the dash pad off and on the passenger side on the frame at the bottom of the windshield were the last numbers of my VIN.
The inspectors called this my "secret" VIN....

Re: Vin Locations.
Sorta unrelated, but I believe 1982 was also the ONLY year without a SPID sheet / RPO sticker / whatever it's called, so we 82'ers don't even have that VIN, or the RPO's at all. The VIN does appear under the windshield glass as usual and on the door jamb stickers.

Re: Vin Locations.
Sorry to bring up a post from so long ago however, I have to share the news and provide information! I found a partial vin on the engine and it matches the one i found on my fender. Finally the saga is over! This car has it's originial engine. Untampered with until me. It's now a 355.
Anyway. The engine vin can be found on the front of the engine under the AC pump. It is visable if you look in the top left space between the bracket and the engine. You also have to move the wire loom that is in front of it. I'll get a better picture tomorrow. Here is mine.

Re: Vin Locations.

The VIN is also located on the Drivers side Door on a sticker which includes Tire pressures etc...
ALSO on the front RH of the Engine as above a partial VIN is located, ALSO I think its on the RH side of the Transmission a partial VIN is stamped... I do NOT believe there is a VIN on the Axel, or Driveshaft. THere is another place on the Frame somewhere but I have neer found it... Its probably hidden inside a subframe somewhere...

Re: Vin Locations.
I know this is a very old thread but I can tell your from owning at least one of every model year from 1985 to 1991 that the VIN stickers are on 87-89 only. I don't know why they started them in 87 but I don know why the discontinued them for 1990. The VIN stickers were supposed to be a theft deterrent. And then came the VATS system in 89. VATS was introduced in the Vette one year earlier as well. By 1990 theft had dropped so dramatically due to VATS that the VIN stickers on the panels were discontinued. I've owned six 1990 and 1991 camaros and never seen a VIN panel sticker.

i have an 85 iroc-z and I donot see the vin on the hood or rear hatch lip....do I have to scrape away a little of the black tar...
Re: Vin Locations.
lol VIN stickers on body panels only apply to 87-89. Here we are a decade later, and bad info is still misleading people.
Why do you need to find a second VIN number?

Re: Vin Locations.
I have an original '91 Trans Am and have never found any additional vin labels or stampings besides the driver's door and the transmission. Thanks for setting the record straight and reminding everyone that the labels were stopped after the intro of VATS.
Re: Vin Locations.
I know this thread kinda died, but I have something related sort of, my 83 bird’s vin plate behind the windshield is literally eaten away by rust, I can barely make out the first few digits, aside from that, it is entirely unreadable. How would one go about getting a fresh vin plate to mount behind the windshield? (Windshield has a huge Texas heat crack all the way across so it will be getting replaced in the near future)

Laws regarding VIN pate replacement vary from state to state; check with your DMV on how to proceed. Very generally, you'll need paperwork proving ownership, and then taking the car to State Police/Highway Patrol for an in-person inspection.
