VIN DECODING
VIN DECODING
Is there a site to go to where I can put my vin number in and have it decoded, I wanna know rear gear ratio, engine number etc...I just found that this car I bought was is a first year IROCZ, so before it gets all hacked up, I wanna research it first. please help,
Re: VIN DECODING
Unless the car is Canadian, Compnine won't show information for a ThirdGen that is older than 1990 as they don't have complete records.
Best option is to look for the SPID on the center console. It will contain the RPO codes specific for that vehicle. If it's not there, you can either purchase an invoice from GM or try to locate the buildsheet (if it does have one - it may not).

You made mention of buying the invoice from GM.... Would that give you all the RPO codes for the car? Would it basically be a copy of the factory buildsheet? And did not all cars come with a factory build sheet and where would you find them on an 86 trans am? I am sure that there are a lot of who would like to know more about our cars.

For your 1986 Trans AM, you would go through PHS to get an invoice (not a buildsheet)
http://www.phs-online.com/
The invoice will contain some of the RPO codes, pricing for the options, ordering/receiving dealership information, lock numbers and a misc or two other things. Do you have your SPID located inside the center console? It will contain all RPO codes for that vehicle.
My experience has been getting an invoice does not include every single RPO option. It also is not a replacement for a buildsheet. The buildsheet has a lot of data that is unique to the vehicle and there is no known replacements. Not all vehicles received the buildsheet as the assembly line workers would often trash the documents (there was more than one). If the document was placed inside the car, it could have been removed by the dealership or previous owner. If it's actually in the car, it could be found just about anywhere if it is in the vehicle at all (under the carpet, behind the dash, up in the bumper cover, etc., are spots that some have found their buildsheet).

Re: VIN DECODING
I am not sure what you mean... Do you mean inside to center console box or the main structure of the center console? I looked inside the box and there was nothing.
Re: VIN DECODING
Open the center console lid. On the inside wall of the center console, you should see a black and white RPO sticker with several 3-character codes. You may have to remove the cassette holder (if equipped) to see it.
