Right Hand Drive

I have seen pictures of right hand drive Camaros and Firebirds (mainly in Australia). Were these cars produced as right hand drive from the factory and were they converted either by GM in Australia or by after market companies?

Living it the UK it would be good to track one down!

I actually had a 1970 Camaro RS back in 1972 that I sold to a company from Australia. They ran an ad in the local paper looking for Camaros and Firebirds with low mileage to ship back to Australia. They told me they had a departure date and were trying to fill a cargo ship with them. The guy who paid me for mine said that they would all be converted to right hand drive cars in Australia.

Well I have seen pictures of thirdgen right hand cars and you could see that basically all they did was flip the stuff, cause floor board and all was still cut out like for the passenger side of the LHD Cars. I could imagine it to be rather uncomfortable to drive in.

Re: Right Hand Drive

Hi guys, I have just become the owner of a right hand drive 87 Firebird, there are a few here down under. This one was converted over here.

This picture was the first one I got of the interior when I pulled out of the barn.

Re: Right Hand Drive

There were no factory rhd thirdgens, they are all conversions.

There are a few kinds. Full mirror conversion, where steering, brake master and booster, and ac blower are swapped left-right. Partial mirror like mine, where just the steering is swapped, and the brakes cross-shafted. Or the steering box is left as-is, and the column is swapped and a chain drive added.

This is neat to see for sure, but I like driving on the left side, guess that's because that's all I have ever done LOL!

Re: Right Hand Drive

These cars weren't sold here by dealers here either, GM (Holden here) had nothing to do with it afaik. They were all imported by low-volume importers, or privately. The conversions were done by third-party businesses, usually specialists in particular vehicles at the time.

Re: Right Hand Drive

The main thing that bothers me about RHC is that when you try to open the console lide from the drivers seat, it the lid would be blocking the way

Re: Right Hand Drive

I am not sure if I would care about the center console or not. I think it would be a really neat thing to take to a car show, and see if people noticed.
