Re: Hemmings and Car Value
My 89 Iroc w/305.....
1. $18,650.
2. $11,900. = Excellent condition.
3. $9000.
4. $6,250.
It's a pretty basic valuator....
But, these cars were well received when new. Enough so that people bought them and socked them away.
When you factor in their age and how few you see out there on the streets, and the fact that you can buy one in unrestored like new condition today.... in some cases for way less than these values.... that = bargain in my book, no restoration $$ needed .... just add gas and throttle

Wow, I'm impressed.
1989 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA
Coupe 2dr
$9,056
(All dollar amounts are in US dollars)

Notes: -10% for 6-cyl (exc Pace Car). -10% for 305/190 V8 on GTA. +10% for T-tops. -15% for auto.
4
$6,500
Condition 4: Fair
#4 cars are daily drivers, with flaws visible to the naked eye. The chrome might have pitting or scratches, the windshield might be chipped. Paintwork is imperfect, and perhaps the fender has a minor dent. The interior could have split seams or a cracked dash. No major parts are missing, but the wheels could differ from the originals, or the interior might not be stock. No major customizations have been made. A #4 car can also be a deteriorated restoration. "Fair" is the one word that describes a #4 car.
3
$8,350
Condition 3: Good
#3 cars could possess some, but not all of the issues of a #4 car, but they will be balanced by other factors such as a fresh paint job or a new, correct interior. #3 cars drive and run well, but might have some incorrect parts. These cars are not used for daily transportation but are ready for a long tour without excuses, and the casual passerby will not find any visual flaws. No major customizations have been made. "Good" is the one word description of a #3 car.
2
$12,550
Condition 2: Excellent
#2 cars could win a local or regional show. They can be former #1 cars that have been driven or have aged. Seasoned observers will have to look closely for flaws, but will be able to find some not seen by the general public. The paint, chrome, glass and interior will all appear as excellent. No excessive smoke will be seen on startup, no unusual noises will emanate from the engine compartment. The vehicle will drive as a new car of its era would. No customizations have been made. The one word description for #2 cars is "excellent."

Re: Hemmings and Car Value
Interesting. I'd say my car is inbetween 1 and 2. I can't claim 100% original to quite make 1, but it's close. It's odd how mileage isn't a factor.

Re: Hemmings and Car Value
Well, pleased to report that even with my Z being in what I would consider to be fair condition, I bought mine for under what it's valued. Makes me feel a whole lot better! Was also pleased to see the line graph showing the uptick in value over the last 5-6 years. Not that I plan on selling it, but it's just nice to see. So glad to just finally have one!

Re: Hemmings and Car Value
From what I see on a number of on line sales and auction sites, those prices are a bit high, especially for the #3 and #4 condition cars. I still see "daily drivers" currently sell for a good bit less than $4000.

Re: Hemmings and Car Value
Actually I think those prices are not way out of the ball park, maybe just a little... I have seen many for less, but the more time goes on the higher the values appear to be, especially really nice cars on ebay and the like.
I will not complain about the prices tho...

I get to add 10% for T-Tops but take away 10% cause it's the LB9. I'll just add another 40% for the SLP package and call it a day haha!
All B.S. aside, I think the high price is a bit low. Only $19,700 for a true museum quality ultra low mileage "concours" quality 1992 Trans Am GTA? I think not, more like $30K. I mean read their description of 1. I would say their 2 price is spot on, but their 3 and 4 prices are too high IMHO.

Re: Hemmings and Car Value
Very true however top echelon cars never are a quick sale because the seller needs the money, but rather sell quite higher often setting new records for sale amounts because they can wait for that just right buyer. These are really the category 1 cars Hemmings is referring to. I can recall a 91/92 Z28 going for like $40K at BJ a few years ago. Right place, right time. I'm not disagreeing with you, just trying to point out a category 1 Hemmings car is something special, if and when they even exist.
