When in storage ?

I couldnt deciede which section to post this but this board seems to be the best. For those of you that have lower mileage cars that you dont drive very much. Could be a higher mileage car too. No standard here. When you have your car sitting in the garage, say weeks or months at a time, do you have a problem with the tires flat spotting? I know tires will when they sit for a while and just wondering how you guys get around this. I know most of the time the tires will round themselfs out when driving for a little. Does anyone have this problem and is there anything you guys do to keep this from happening when you dont drive it for a while? I guess you could put the car up on jack stands to keep the tires off the ground but how many people would do that. What about putting a piece of carpet under each tire like you would see at a dealership showroom? I dont drive my iroc all the time. I've put about 8k on my car in the past 10 years and always have the flat spot problem when I drive it.

Re: When in storage ?

I'm sure there are a bunch of different opinions on this. I have had several vehicles parked over the winter months for years now and I have never once had a problem with tires flat spotting. That's not to say it can't or hasn't happened -- it just hasn't happened to me personally.

It's easy enough to put the car up on stands if you are concerned.

You will probably also hear that you should start the car at least once a month (maybe even weekly) and let it get up to temp to burn off any condensation in the exhaust and to keep the seals from drying out. I will say this is one you should do.

I live in a dry climate and I have a minor leak on one of my cars that sits a lot and I do think it's because I don't drive it or even start it for months on end. I think the seals are starting to dry out on.

Re: When in storage ?

I do start my car regularly and let it run for about 30 minutes or so. Atleast long enough to have the cooling fans kick on an off a couple times. Its just when my car sits in the garage a couple weeks and I take it out for a drive, it vibrates but most of it goes away after some miles of driving it and gets better the longer I drive it. It never did this when I first put on new tires but starts after I let it sit in the garage for a week or so it seems. I'm just wanting to know if anybody else has a flat spotting problem from sitting in the garage and how you go about preventing it.

Re: When in storage ?

Modern radial tires do not flat spot. They might thump a wee bit right after storage, but ususally run true after a few miles.

Re: When in storage ?

If you put the air pressure at the higher end of the tires specs it should be fine. I've stored mine every winter and never had an issue.

Re: When in storage ?

All my cars in storage for months at a time never flat spot. I even had a tire go flat after sitting for month and a half. Just patched it and filled up, spot went away and car felt good

Re: When in storage ?

I've stored my since it was new, (1984) and have always put the chassis on blocks to take some of the weight off of the suspension. During the winter months I pull the battery and store it inside. I do not started the car during the winter months but put gas stabilizer in the tank and take it out for it's last drive of the season to work it in the fuel system. Also I change the oil regardless of how many miles are on it. Last but not least, I cover the garage floor with heavy plastic to prevent moisture from coming up through the floor to prevent rust and condensation under the car.
