Newbie help

Can anybody tell me if the IROC came in a 5.7, convertible, 5 speed? Bear with me, I'm new to the forum. I've looked a a bunch of Camaros, just really want to buy the right one. The only requirement from the Mrs. Is that it be convertible or t-top. I want the 350 and a 5 speed. Looking to spend 6-8k and restore as needed. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Re: Newbie help

No 5.7 convertibles were made with either transmission, and the 5.7 was never available with the 5 speed as it couldn't handle the torque it put out. For that very reason, the 3rd gen is one of only two cars that I would rather have an automatic transmission than a manual in (the other being the 1984-88 Corvette with the notoriously troublesome electronic overdrives "4+3" (=none, as I like to say) manual).

Re: Newbie help

Great info guys, thanks. So, I've been looking real hard for a car that doesn't exist. Narrowing it down.

Re: Newbie help

I think there were 4 L98 verts made in 87 for customers.

Re: Newbie help

I don't have a feeling he is looking for a 1 of 4 or 1 of 1 car. He's looking for what the realistic options are out there.

Re: Newbie help

That isn't a 1 of 1 or a 1 of 4 car either. If you read the article, it states the car as the only 5.7 liter convertible created by ASC, the the company that makes the GM convertible. That makes this an aftermarket version. Also, they are talking about a 300-350hp TPI. This isn't a factory built engine. Was the car a 5.7 IROC that was converted to a vert or is it a Factory vert with a Bill Mitchell TPI built engine?

Re: Newbie help

I have the VIN for 4 1987 IROC-Z L98 Convertibles. I verified the VINs and they all came back as 350 IROC-Zs, oddly one came back as being both Norwood and Van Nuys. So the article I believe is wrong, it might be the only '88/'89 as it mentions that in the article, which I would believe as being a good possibility.

If that is true, then it is 1 of 5. But keep in mind that it would have a 2 in the VIN instead of a 3...

Re: Newbie help

Looking at an 88, t-top, 116K, Red, black and gray all original interior, 5.7. Looks extremely clean, but pictures can lie. He's asking $5,300. Anything I should be aware of on the 88? I have him sending me the VIN so I can look further in to it. Sounds negotiable. Thanks in advance.

Re: Newbie help

88 is as good as any other year.

First year for no Z28 without IROC
Last year for no rear seat shoulder belt
first year for the serpentine Engine
Last year for the 9th injector used for starting (Can be eliminated by using a 1989 Chip)
Last year for the Black painted cowl piece in front of the windshield.
Last year (I think) for the silver painted bolts around headlights (Might be Firebird only)
First Year for all cars to be made in Van Nuys, CA.
First Year for new design IROC Wheels

Make sure the VIN is 1G1FP218?JL1xxxxx the 8 indicates the L98 (350)

To be honest, look at the underside for rust, the floor often rusts out, especially where you put your feet. Also be aware of rust around the rear wheel wells.
