3rd Gen's getting love at Mecum Chicago

$17K for a Camaro Z28 1LE. Two 84 TA's for $14K. Plus a few more for $4k on up. That's the most I've seen at one auction. 3rd Gens maybe starting to get on the collector car radar?

Re: 3rd Gen's getting love at Mecum Chicago

Yeah, I've seen that one up for sale on Ebay. He wanted $99k, then $89K etc. Guess we will see exactly what its worth. There are a couple more Camaro 1LE's Saturday along with a 89 Factory Demo TA. There's also a couple of resto mod Camaros on Friday. At least 10 3rd Gens and some nice ones at this auction.

Lots of nice stuff at this auction!! I'm excited to see what the firehawk, the two blue 1LEs and the TTA go for. I was very tempted to go to this one.

I've never seen 5 3rd Gens up for auction on the premier sale day (Saturday) before. Most of the time I see 3rd Gens listed on day one or Sundays (If they have them). In other words, the discount days. But to have 5 nice 3rd Gens on sale on Saturday, Wow!

The 3Gs must be owned by some heavy hitters, People that bring a lot of cars to the sale, usually get the good prime day slots. I really hope they do well.

Results:

The blue 90 IROC 1LE with the LB9 - 5-speed bid to $32,500, no sale
The blue 90 IROC 1LE with the L98 - 5-speed bid to $42,500, no sale
92 Firehawk bid to $40,000, no sale
White hardtop TTA sold for $34,000. I should have bid, that was a good price for such an awesome car!!

Bad *** is all I can say. Can't believe I missed this. Been looking forever for this one: TTA, hard top, cloth interior, less than 7K miles...it doesn't get any better than this.

It'd be in my garage right now if I knew it was being sold in Chicago. Not only a b!tchin' 3rd Gen, but a rarity in the TTA cars and a piece of Indy 500 history. Awesome car.

It looks like the sale of the Firehawk and the 1LE L98 were finalized. They took the Bid Goes On message, off and show them sold. Don't know if they update bids after the auction or the bid price was the sale price. Still, not a bad weekend for 3rd Gens.

So the 'Hawk did sell for ~$40K? Just wondering because it's only a base model. People are smoking crack thinking these should sell for what Competition packages ones go for like what he was asking for it

IMHO, in 2014, base model 'Hawks should be $40-$65K and competition package (depending on the options) should go for between $85K-$125K. #027 and #003 being on the very high end of the scale (even though #027 doesn't have B4U) but that's why IMO #003 is the most valuable.

Re: 3rd Gen's getting love at Mecum Chicago

I created an account so I could see the results and it says "The Bid Goes On...$40,000", does that mean it hasn't be sold?

Re: 3rd Gen's getting love at Mecum Chicago

I too have a membership. Something changed this morning. I got on line early this morning when I checked out the results. Both the Firehawk and the 1LE had sold banners. One weird thing I noticed then was the Camaro still listed as Bid Goes On when I opened up the info and picture file. Even though it said sold on the picture list. I didn't look at the text file. I wonder if someone backed out of an after auction deal. I was surprised to see the sold banner after reading the previous results listed above. They listed the sale price as the last bid price. Even more surprised to see them changed to bid goes on now!

Couldn't agree more!!! It is 1 of 15 I believe. I figured it was going to sell in the mid-high 40's. Same here, I would have loved to have added it to the collection. Someone got a good deal on it!

Re: 3rd Gen's getting love at Mecum Chicago

There were 24 hard top/leather TTAs.

Only 13 or 15 were hard top/cloth TTAs. I say 13 or 15 because various sources list different numbers. Either way, no more than 15 hard top/cloth TTAs were ever built.

The irony of the hard top being the rare TTA: it was the 'centerfold' in the 89 TTA sales brochure!

The one Mecum sold is the first one I know publicly sold since 2010 (hard top/cloth). I've been actively looking for a hard top/cloth TTA since 2008. Which is why I haven' bought the 10K mile TTA close to me-its a T-top/leather car.

On a side note, there's a guy in AZ that has all 4 variations of TTA in his garage: T-top/leather, T-top/cloth (Festival car), hard top/leather, and hard top/cloth!

evo305tpi-I replied to your PM, sorry about the delay. Didn't see it.

I was under the impression there were 15 HT/cloth TTA's.
I have known of a couple hardtops(dont remember the interior) for sale since I got my TTA in 2010, but they were not "advertised" very much. Just a mention in passing here or there.

Hindsight is 20/20, if we only would have known to get the hardtop car. But thinking of the late 80's mentality-t tops were way cooler and leather interior was the higher end way to go.

Sorry you missed out on this one. If you are buying for collectibility, then hold out, but if you just want a nice example for fun-the t top car drives nice too!

kymmee,
Thanks bro, I've been bummed out this week! I should have checked the TTA forum, it was talked about there prior to the sale, as you know!

I've wanted a hardtop TTA since '89! I'll keep looking for one as it's my dream car.

The one close to me is fantastic, a great guy owns it (original owner) and is all original with less than 10K miles. Just not a hard top car! What's wrong with me ?

I'm of the rarity does not necessarily mean better mentality. I'd way rather have leather over cloth and T Tops over non.
