Does anyone know if you can a new VIN tag decal that is affixed to the drivers door? The information is all but gone that was on it and I would like to get a new one but don't quite know who or where I can obtain one or if is even possible to get one. Thanks for any info that can be given.

 

I got mine from ECS VIN. But last I heard, he only wanted to sell to dealers.

 

I wonder if it is something I can get from a GM dealership? You can't read any of the info my tag and the VIN at the windshield is dirty enough that it makes it really tuff to read as well. I'll have to check with the dealership and see if they can help me out or at least point me in the direction I need to go. Thanks for the reply.

 

someone was reproducing those for Turbo Buicks in the last couple of years, but it was like $100 or so... i can think of a lot better ways to spend $100 than a sticker that goes in the door jamb..

 

Can't argue with that, but the info is all but gone which can be a bit of a problem but it is still something I would like to replace if it is possible for a reasonable cost. Thanks for the replies.

 

If you have some moderate computer skills, you can design and print your own on a standard lable. There is only one GM logo and that can be grabbed from several places. The rest is just standard type font provided you can still read the faded original info. If you can't, someone here could snap a picture for you from their car that is the same year & model (you just enter your VIN instead of theirs).

I did this with my SPID and you could not tell the difference between it and an original.

 

If anyone is looking to volunteer, I'd be interesting in making one for my 87 Iroc. When a previous owner put on a replacement door, they took off the label and never reattached it.

 

You cannot reattach the labels. From my experience if they peal off, they leave the white residue behind... Then the label becomes clear. IIRC

Not sure we are talking about the same thing. I don't think the OP wanted to re-attach a label; I think he needed an new label to replace the original that had been removed or severely faded. When I did my SPID, I used card stock sandwiched between clear, adhesive backed laminating sheets.

He could completely remove his old labels and make new ones with or without the GM logo. Attached is my reproduced SPID and the labels I think he could make from my door. I am going to take a shot at it since mine are getting worn and faded too. If I am successful, I'll post a pic or two and make the excel file available to others.

 

I must have gone down a rabbit hole in my head.. Or I was reading another thread on this same topic, for some reason I thought someone mentioned trying to peal it off... Oh well, just more plaque for my crazy wall I guess...

Also I guess since I am thinking about it, you might want to use a Laser Printer, or coat the sticker. The ink from an INK-Jet type printer will run when it gets wet. The Laser Printer will not run when it gets wet. However if you use an Ink Jet, you should be able to clear coat them to protect them from water, not sure how well it would work.

I did another project when I repainted my suspension, and I used http://www.onlinelabels.com/ I got a water proof Laser label, it worked fantastic...

I have not used the inkjet waterproof, not sure if it would run or not.

 

Yes, using a laser printer would be the way to go and I'll have to check out the "onlinelabels" website to see if they carry a better material than the laminating pages I used on the SPID. The waterproof stuff would be better in the door jam for these labels. Thanks for the idea, okfoz.
